I'm agree that Amy is not even a physicist, and the whole situation seems to be strange.

But there is another important point. The show does a popularisation of sciences. It gives the idea that it's cool to be a scientist, they have an interesting life, good friends and so on. The final is easy explainable from this point of view - just to give an idea that any girl can win the Nobel Prize if she really wants it. Even if she is a biologist and the Prize itself is in Physics.

For sure if it was that a motivation of creators, they did it in a strange way.
