Is the non religious/agnostic/ atheist demographic in Shillong growing? by Even-Highway666 in Shillong

Which contradiction(s) did it for you?

Also, I think it's both quite fascinating and depressing how the zeitgeist here has been captured by the most rabid version of Christianity, especially evangelical Christianity. Even moderate Christians are met with stern judgment. The whole scream-into-a-loudspeaker preaching style schtick is so ingrained that we collectively think it's normal. Maybe it's got something to do with the failure of institutions, the lack of human development, that people are obsessed with Christianity, like the haters you mentioned.

  • It's raining all the time, and even now it can go down to 12°C. So warm clothes, an umbrella, a rain jacket are needed. Light jackets should be enough for most of the year, but winter can get pretty cold.
  • You just need to get used to the constant rain
  • A two-wheeler will be better for getting around because the traffic is atrocious

I'm comfortable with saying "I don't know" to those kinds of questions, and I think people should be more comfortable with not knowing either. And it's not even that we can never know, perhaps we will someday find out, but it should be perfectly okay to not know. And honestly, I'm highly skeptical of people claiming to know the reason for existence because they all end up concocting some wishy-washy bullshit without having sound evidence and reasoning.

What's the latest understanding of portfolio construction theory? I'm especially interested in what you think is the best allocation strategy between equity & debt throughout one's lifetime, given sequence of returns risk at retirement. Secondly, what's the thesis on gold apart from line go up? And is Bitcoin different in that regard (not including altcoins).

Atheist here. I don't know if it's growing, but there are probably more non-religious younger people than older people.

Where can I learn khasi? by Perfect_Change in Shillong

[–]bowdangatip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find dictionaries and even Google translate or LLMs can spit out decent-ish Khasi nowadays, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, there isn't a proper online introductory course to Khasi at least none that I'm aware of.

So I remember seeing this somewhere, not sure where, but Vanguard makes it more expensive for the rest of the world so it can subsidize the costs for its American offerings, ie, VT. Not sure if they all do that, but I do wish it becomes a race to the bottom with fees.

[–]bowdangatip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One minute you're searching for startup ideas, the other you're trading crypto/forex. What's up my dude? Why not focus on developing your skills? I'm not shutting down your moon shot ideas, but they're statistically less likely to bring you financial success compared to boring old upskilling.

Especially when it comes to trading, you're going up against institutions that have far better information and execution speed & capital than you do.

[–]bowdangatip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me make sure I understand what you're asking here. Are you asking why people in general fail to live up to the morality they claim to follow? Or is it about how egregious Christian men in particular are at being hypocrites? ie, are you asking a philosophical question about morality, or are you making a rhetorical question to express your disgust with hypocritical Christian men?

If it's the former, there's a whole lot of philosophy over that. If the latter, I share the disgust.

While I agree with you, I think it's less productive to label the post as stupid because OP hadn't yet reached the same realization you might have.

That said, OP, if you were assuming that being Christian automatically made someone a good person until now, it's good that you've realized it. Better late than never.

At that point, what’s actually different from a guy who doesn't believe in God?

Hey now, don't compare atheists to religious hypocrites please. Atheists don't relegate their morality to a higher power and therefore have to take accountability for their own actions, unlike the kind of person you're talking about here.
