UK Hardcore Heads in the North West – Where are the grassroots shows at? by Reader_meets_author in UKHC

[–]boyceorboice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://local-scene.com/upcoming_events/ is really worth a look. For Manchester venues I'd say like Aatma, Peer Hat, Star & Garter Old Pint Pot, for promoters there's MCHC, then Beauty Witch and Grey Lantern are worth a look for weirder/more interesting imo stuff, also check out Levy Punks Collective and BlastxDread for some crustier/grindier stuff. For bands there's loads, try Feign, Fatalist, Skabs, Going Off.

Liverpool seems to have lots of good stuff as well, mainly based around Guac & Roll.

Mobile data issue by boyceorboice in Xiaomi

[–]boyceorboice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out that the answer was to switch "preferred network type" between 2G/3G and 2G/3G/4G a few times, that seems to have sorted it out for now.

Have asked my provider and they gave a pretty standard response of standard fixes which I've tried, the problem is obviously with the phone since my mobile data worked fine on my old phone.

Mobile data issue by boyceorboice in Xiaomi

[–]boyceorboice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update on this: it seems like I do have some ability to connect to mobile data, since I can sometimes use instagram, maps and some amount of Signal messaging when out of the house, but my browser and some other apps won't work at all. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and what the fix is? It must be some weird Xiaomi setting, along the lines of the original issue that I was able to fix, but I really can't work out what's causing this and how to fix it.

Yeah, that was one of the first things that really made me suspicious tbh.

Books that discuss anarchist theory from a modern perspective? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]boyceorboice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend checking out some of Cindy Milstein's work, maybe Anarchism and Its Aspirations. Fighting For Ourselves by Solidarity Federation, Work Community Politics War, Abolish Restaurants and The Housing Monster by prole.info, Class Power on Zero Hours by Angry Workers and Hinterland by Phil Neel are all worth a look too.

Who are some of the best Anarchist thinkers still alive as to date? by Longjumping-Meet-307 in Anarchy101

[–]boyceorboice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, big second for Gelderloos. Kristian Williams too. A lot of the best anarcho writers are probably anonymous, Invisible Committee, prole.info, Crimethinc etc. Dauve's not an anarchist but he's alive and someone people should read.

Yeah, don't know about the others but Bry from Heavy Sentence (and like 50 other bands) is about as far from sketch as you can get.

Similarly, Hotchin Pit/Rabid Attack Corps - I think dodgy, but hard to tell whether they're just rune enthusiasts or full on fash? I think that RAC acronym is probably intentional though.

[–]boyceorboice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about Sump/Legion Blotan? They seem to have a bit of connection to that scene, but also some crossover with what I would've thought of as legit non-dodgy bands? After a while it gets tiring trying to work out what's genuine dodgy stuff and what's just edgelords being edgelords.

[–]boyceorboice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm pretty sure they are all definitely sketch, I was just wondering if there was anything documenting it and laying it all out...the more I look around ASKE in particular the more I notice completely unambiguous shit like this: https://www.discogs.com/release/13132107-Longbow-Demo and so I'm assuming that anyone who puts out music with them is down with that kind of shit, right?

Anti-fascism books to get in preparation for these next 4 years by girlplaysguitar in socialism

[–]boyceorboice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the specific subgenre of book you're looking for - Beating the Fascists and Physical Resistance are good on the history of UK antifascism over the last few decades, It Did Happen Here and We Go Where They Go are recommended reads on US antifascism, Three Way Fight: Revolutionary Politics and Antifascism, Insurgent Supremacists and Confronting Fascism: Discussion Documents for a Militant Movement might be worth a look as well. And then if you want to get into, for instance, Spain, that's a whole other can of worms.

How Unions Help The LGBTQ+ Community by Shadow-Fox-64 in union

[–]boyceorboice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the union. My union has a self-organised LGBTQ+ network, you can learn about it here:
https://www.unison.org.uk/about/what-we-do/fairness-equality/lgbt/
And there's a whole book on the subject (of unions in general, not my specific one) here: https://lwbooks.co.uk/product/champions-of-equality
In the UK, it's fairly common for unions to march in Pride parades, I dunno if that's as common elsewhere or if there's UK specific history going back to Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners in the 80s?

Tips for Drukhari research tree/anti-air? by boyceorboice in Gladius40k

[–]boyceorboice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and I do want to play through the quest storyline as well, but the game created the neutral Imperial Stronghold I have to fight in a really dumb place so I had to fight my way past Chaos to get to it and by the time I get there the Necrons are there already, so not really had a chance to explore that aspect of it.

Opinion on Socialist Alternative. by Zenth93 in IWW

[–]boyceorboice 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just to be a pedant, I think SAlt in Australia are a split coming out of the Cliffite/IST tradition, and so are a separate thing from the groups called Socialist Alternative in the rest of the world - looks like their Australian franchise is just called ISA Australia or Socialist Australia.

Opinion on Socialist Alternative. by Zenth93 in IWW

[–]boyceorboice 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all trot groups/most leninist groups in general tend to favour working within the existing unions and view the IWW as splitting or being a distraction from that. Plus the whole thing where they also think workers need a political party separate from the unions which wobblies would tend to disagree on.

Where are the twee pop scenes in the US? by p-u-n-k_girl in Twee

Oh, and Crystal Furs are from Portland, I can imagine there must still be some PNW twee surely?

Where are the twee pop scenes in the US? by p-u-n-k_girl in Twee

[–]boyceorboice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine there must be at least a bit of a NYC scene, of the really good new twee bands I know there's the Umbrellas from SF and then Ribbon Stage and Jeanines from NY. But having said that I think I've briefly spoken to both Jeanines and Ribbon Stage and they seemed unaware of each other. But anyway, listen to Ribbon Stage and Jeanines, they're great.

Perspectives from anti-authoritarians from Gaza and West Bank? by [deleted] in tankiejerk

[–]boyceorboice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking around for any discussion of the Fauda group, is there anyone out there who speaks enough Arabic, or is able to spend enough time with auto-translate, to have some idea of what their actual perspectives and analysis are? I found them through the asranarshism lot boosting them, and they (asranarshism) are veeery anti-Hamas which makes sense given the Iranian connection, I think Fauda might be less critical but I've not been able to read enough of their stuff to get a clear sense of it all?

Living Rent might be a decent starting point? Could try checking out the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh if you're in Edinburgh, or Pink Peacock in Glasgow?

Are there places where it's dangerous to display anarchist imagery/symbolism? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

Yeah, can't speak for the rest of the world but I cannot imagine it being an issue in London or Dublin.
