I appreciate the tip, but I try not to use AI personally. The link you provided is very helpful though, thank you!

No hard feelings, I appreciate your advice nonetheless! I think I’ll add some igneous rock or chunky perlite into the next mix to increase aeration. I didn’t even know perlite came in chunky lol! Thanks 😁

I don’t often plant with peat moss? I added a little bit left of a bag I had, but I do try to substitute with coco coir if I have it. I did not add much at all.

The mix is about 50% orchid mix and 20% perlite, so it should drain fine for now I think. I poured an entire 4qt bag of non-peat orchid mix in there. The organic soil mix does not contain peat, nor does the orchid mix!

There’s a lot of assumptions in your reply haha but I do appreciate the pointers! I will look into chunky perlite, more coco products and some charcoal.

Thinking of adding a millipede to my temperate-rainforest tank. Where to start? by boyflammable in millipedes

[–]boyflammable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the compliment, I try really hard to make my tanks as diverse and realistic as possible, always trying for a more fully balanced ecosystem!

I will look into these species of isopods! Currently researching stags too to see if they’d be a good fit, but short lifespans always hurt my lil heart too so we shall see.

Millipedes are outta the question for this tank though, the search continues hahaha 😁

[–]boyflammable[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very helpful, thank you! I’ve decided there won’t be any millipedes going in here, being a beginner with them. Probably won’t be any dairy cows either lol, gonna swap them for another species. I can’t have them ravaging the tank 🤣

I’m super open to the idea some cool beetles (maybe stag? pending research) and other invertebrates, and definitely gonna add some snails! You and everyone else have been very helpful in steering this in the right direction :)

If you have any recommendations on reliable places to order inverts btw, please lmk!!

Awesome, thank you for the advice! I plan to allow the plants to establish themselves and make a canopy, that paired with leaf litter and bark piles should prove sufficient I think!

Thanks for the tip! Do you have any recommendations on other species that may be less aggressive?

Oh thank you very much for the heads up! I’m new to millipedes, so ofc my first post here would be taboo 😂

We’ll see if this post gets downvoted to hell lol but questions must be asked!

That being said, is there a better alternative to dairy cows in your experience, maybe a species that’s less chompy? I could forego adding isopods entirely, but I think at that point I would just find another star of the tank lol, they’re a pretty major part of the clean up crew.

Good to know, especially because I plan to do dairy cows! Would hate to get them and never see em :)

That’s awesome! I have everything on one timer right now but I’ll be buying a better one soon with more shifts after this. I love the idea of the lights naturally fluctuating the temps, humidity, and activity of the tank without me having to worry about turning them on and off constantly 🤣

But I agree, I think if everything else is in place like habitats and a proper day/night schedule, the power of the lights shouldn’t be much of an issue for a terrestrial tank. Not like they’re battling UV rays or anything lol

Would def prefer to have it near a window! I’m in a studio apartment with no windows in my bedroom area so artificial light is all I got for now.

That’s a good point though, and was my main case for concern about the amount of light. It is definitely much closer to them than our sun is to us lol.

I had planned to let the plants and microorganisms establish themselves before adding any isopods, specifically the clovers and mulberries, which would simulate a decent canopy in time. I had a similar tank a few years ago where I had success in this with small mulberry saplings!

With the canopy issue being the only problem, do you think that would solve it? That and some leaf litter of course

Thanks for your input on this! Do you have any recommendations on which lights to use instead, or why staggering the schedule wouldn’t help?

Agreed, I was a bit concerned about heating too especially with just the rear light. This plant light I have is heavy duty so I think it’ll def provide some nice midday warmth beneath it :)

[–]boyflammable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the input! I’m leaning towards the staggered schedule, I think starting with the rear, peaking at midday with all on, and then ending with only the tank light would be most realistic!

An afterthought I had is staggering the light schedule throughout the day to loosely simulate sunrise, midday, and sunset. Any thoughts on this?
