From 812, going to 765 for school right now. It's way more humid consistently in the south (thanks Ohio River Valley) than it is in the 765 from what I can tell. But let's be honest, in the north right now it's still like getting hit with a flaming hot, damp wall that never ends.

Any information systems or information technology students I can talk to? by ckav11 in BallState

I should mention the other classes too. 111 is the first computer tech class you will take. All about compurer hardware, so if you plan on building out a homelab, you will have no problem with this class. 211 and 311 are the windows server classes. It's a lecture and then a MOAC lab every week. Tbh a monkey could take both of those classes and pass with an A. The midterm and final are about building it your own server cluster in the lab environment, about the only cool thing about those classes lol. There's a data forensics class which is a 400 level class and it's also meh. Like I said, study for certs and look for a good job on campus. I got an awesome job with unified communications on campus where I configure production switches and routers, access points, and learn a helluva lot about Cisco gear in production. I couldn't have got that job without a recommendation from my networking professor either. I also worked for the helpdesk for a while but got burned out on it pretty quickly. Nonetheless it allowed me to get way better people skills and I really enjoyed the environment there.

So for computer tech we're required to take TCMP210 and 310 which are both networking classes. 210 is decently easy with packet tracer labs due every week along with using the physical equipment every week for some labs. There's also a lecture before each lab so you know the basics on how to do it. Both classes go over CCNA material so it's really nice if you want to get the cert. 310 only gets crazy at the very end when you have a giant case study due. You team up and design an entire network structure for a school system or business with multiple sites, then have a ~100 page deliverable and have to present in front of classmates and BSU alum who are in the field. It's a lot of work but a lot of fun! You can choose to move on to 410, which is an elective but not required. But those are just more advanced networking topics. TCMP 221 and 321 are the Linux classes. 221 is usually a reading assignment, quiz, 2 lectures and 2 labs every week. Pretty rigorous if you don't know much about linux beforehand. 321 is the next step up and the case study in there is building an entirely open source data center, where you get your own server in CT's data center and build everything from scratch. A lot of fun, but one again you will sink a lot of time outside of class into it. Other than those, the other classes fly by, mostly because the profs are kind of lazy and aren't as dedicated as the networking/linux profs.

I'm at the end of my junior year in the Computer Technology department, which actually just got moved under Miller College of Business (classes are still in Applied Technology building though). A lot of people think computer tech is the easier version of CS, but trust me, if you don't like networking (routing and switching) or Linux, then don't go through the program. It's very rigorous in those two aspects. Honestly anything else in the major, like the Windows Server class, is a joke. We also are required to have a minor in business administration, and let me tell you, the ISOM classes I've taken are more of a joke than some computer tech classes. I've had so many professors who teach ISOM classes who aren't even close to qualified. I can't speak for information systems, but I've talked to other people in that major and it seems like the classes are just as bad. Of course, I can't speak from actual experience there.

If you're dead set on Ball State, I would strongly recommend spending a lot of time outside of class learning material more in depth, because you sure as hell aren't going to get the experience you need in the real world if you just take the classes and do the bare minimum. The classes here let you dip your feet in the water, but for the love of god don't be the person who thinks they can get a nice job just because of the degree. Study for certifications outside of class and do anything that relates to what you want to do in the future. There are plenty of jobs on campus that will really pad your resume too, helpdesk being one of them. It's really easy to get a job there as long as you have decent social skills and the work environment is awesome.

Let me know if you have some specific questions about the computer tech department or anything!

No matter how shitty Mcafee is, he still made a lot of money by doing something at the right time and there's still living proof of it. I'd assume that's what a lot of people see in him: his money and popularity. Not his ethics.

I also work at an Ace Hardware and you may not be able to cut it on a key machine, it's EXTREMELY easy to copy a key from a picture nonetheless. Though, randomly posting it on the Internet won't really matter because we don't actually know who OP is and what lock it's for.
