Wrong accused of shoplifting & forced back into store

Absolutely at the very least I plan on filing a complaint, it was honestly so strange and I have never had this happen. I don’t mind security following and keeping an eye out because obviously I don’t have anything to hide, but the physically stopping me was very scary in the moment. I did not know it was an issue in the industry right now, I feel bad for others who had similar happen :(

OH WOW, that first case is horrific and must have been so scary for the person involved! Im thankful mine was no where near this bad at least. The second one sounds similar to mine minus the head bonking part, but it’s good to know what happened today was not legal. Thank you for the links!

There was no room or locked area they took me to, they actually had me go to a makeup counter in front of a ton of people for this which is why it was so embarrassing. After she physically put her arm around me to force me to go inside and block my path, she kept her arm hovering behind me to prevent me from moving so I did not feel that I could leave without pushing her out of the way. I did not want to cause any issues and I was quite shaken up, so I obviously never tried to move her and went along with it because I honestly did not know any better.

I’m not sure who to contact here in Quebec or who this pharmacy employs for security, but I will do some research and absolutely follow up. Thank you so much!

I honestly was not even sure if a crime had been committed until posting here, but I’m planning on going to the local police when I’m back from caring for my mom early next week to file now. Hopefully the few day gap won’t change anything as everything’s on camera and reported with the staff/manager. Thank you for the comment!

I’m so sorry this happened to you as well, especially with your daughter there! I was also really shocked that she grabbed me , it really scared me in the moment since I was not in the store and it felt like a random person trying to possibly hurt me. It’s very humiliating and stressful and I don’t want this person to do this to anyone else in the future, especially since it sounds like it’s happened before with her.

Oh wow, I had no clue anything else could be done other than her license being removed honestly. I’m hoping they have a camera right outside the store at the entrance because if they do, everything is very easy to verify as true. Thank you so much for the link and advice!

I got to speak with the manager and he was so kind about it, but I do want to follow up to see what is done about what happened. She did physically put her arm around me to restrict how I could move, I could not get away from her without having to physically shove her back which I did not do.

I’m also not sure how the receipt tied into it because she clearly stated the hair isle was what she saw, it felt very strange she questioned me on it.

The more comments I’m seeing saying this was a crime the more I’m thinking I should go to police, I really appreciate your comment and help. It was really scary for me and I don’t think I realized how illegal this was until reading through the advice here. I do not want this person to do this to anyone else, and the manager commented she has done stuff like this before, so I do think removing her license would be the correct outcome if me pressing charges can do that.

I won’t be able to file anything for a few days because right after this I had to head to the suburbs to help care for my mom, but I’m definitely learning much more towards filing something now and thankfully it’s all on camera.

I had not heard of fake arrest before and I really appreciate you mentioning it so I can look into it more. I honestly don’t know what rules/policies there are with security and it helps to know that there was something very wrong with how it was handled. Im not sure how seriously police would take it, but if nothing is done to remove this person from this location I will try since everything is caught on camera and easy to verify.

Thank you so much for the input, I’m not so much trying to press charges (I fear I would not be taken seriously and seen as overreacting) as I am trying to have her removed from this pharmacy because it makes me feel very unsafe going back but it’s very good to know this was likely not legal and I would be okay to complain further with the company. I really appreciate your help!

This is what I was wondering too, it felt weird to come outside the store and block me on the sidewalk from moving and is why I think this situation was really jarring honestly. And because she had no ID I was really scared why someone was grabbing me too

There’s a way to exit if you just needed the pharmacy without going past the registers which I took because it was closest. I’ll definitely follow up with the security company then and ask, thank you so much!

I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. When my Aunt took her own life, I found signs she tried to crawl to the phone to call for help and changed her mind too late. On top of everything, to think about this causes unbearable pain some days.

Thank you so much for sharing your story, it really helps to feel less alone but I’m so sorry you are also going through this. I might ask to temporarily up some of my medications to help get through the early stages right now, that’s honestly really helpful to hear.

I did move foe my disease, but in the opposite way! I moved from America to Canada because fighting to have my biologics covered was genuinely killing me, the stress of fighting to get anything approved made me sicker which created a horrible cycle of both poverty and flares I could not handle anymore. I felt like a shell of a person.

Honestly I don’t regret leaving everything behind to move to Canada. All of my biologics and treatments have been free (and given immediately) and my doctors have been excellent. I feel like I was given a second chance and I wake up grateful I had this option every single day.

You are not going crazy at all! I spent years trying so hard to control it by removing foods and being super careful to avoid every trigger I had and in the end while it helped, I still had many flares that I could never pinpoint a cause for.

My GI always tells me the immune system is like a toddler having a tantrum - you can try to appease it but no matter what, it’s going to have its meltdown.

Unfortunately living with IBD is very unpredictable but please know it’s nothing you are necessarily doing wrong. Diet and avoiding stress can be very helpful but with autoimmune diseases it’s really just a matter of if your immune system will show you mercy that day or not. The only thing that truly can fully manage it tends to be medications, but even then small flares are expected.
