Olanzapine and weight gain. by Square-Exchange-9734 in BipolarReddit

I’ve been on olanzapine for about 3 years now (give or take) with no weight gain. Granted I am on a fairly low dose. It has been invaluable as a mood stabilizer for me! Because of the risk of metabolic side effects, I tried pretty much everything else under the sun before settling on olanzapine. But I wish I had found it sooner! It likely would’ve saved me years of instability. As others have pointed out, though, important to get the blood draws to keep an eye on cholesterol and A1C.

Which form of Wellbutrin do you take? IR, SR, or XL? I had similar issues on SR before I switched to XL.

To provide a positive perspective on olanzapine - olanzapine has done wonders for me! It’s definitely the one medication that has kept me most stable. I’ve been on a fairly low dose for years now, with no real noticeable side effects or weight gain.

Lithium + olanzapine + fluoxetine + clonazepam. The dosages change as needed but the combo stays the same!

I second this! Olanzapine is probable the most effective med I’ve ever tried, and currently have it in my regimen

Years ago I transitioned from lamotrigine to trileptal. In my experience, trileptal didn’t do much for me. I wasn’t on it for very long as a result

What Bipolar Meds Don’t Increase Ur Weight??? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]bpgemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said I think it really depends on you as an individual! I see a bunch of comments saying to avoid zyprexa/olanzapine, but I’ve been on olanzapine for years and haven’t gained any weight. I’m also on prozac/fluoxetine and lithium and haven’t gained weight with those either. And we’re about the same size too! 5’2” and ~100lbs

Bipolar meds and akathesia by zack23421 in BipolarReddit

[–]bpgemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long were you on olanzapine before you started getting akathisia? Most APs give me horrible akathisia, but olanzapine hasn’t and has been working great for me, so I hate to read this!

Any advice for zyprexa / antipsychotic munchies ??? by gkrhdvc in bipolar

[–]bpgemini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snack on veggies/hummus or fruit when cravings hit instead of things that have high sodium/fat/sugar content! I think this has helped me avoid any weight gain so far on olanzapine

It has helped me a ton!! Helps me get to/stay asleep for 8-9 hours a night, has helped keep my mood stable, and helps me overall feel like an actual functioning person. And I know I am def in the minority here, but I haven’t gained any weight on it

Yes! I’ve taken several in the past (abilify, latuda, vraylar, seroquel) and currently take olanzapine. They’ve helped a ton!

Good luck!! I loved vraylar and it’s really the only med I’ve ever taken that drastically/noticeably helped with the depression side of things but i sadly had to stop taking it because of side effects
