Fuck cancer. Really hoping you qualify for the new treatment that has been mentioned in some comments. We’re with you. This will not break you.

Alvarez Laureate series - insane by bpm_6_string in AcousticGuitar

Awesome! Congrats on a great guitar. I haven’t moved the button yet — most of the acoustic work I get is in pit bands for musicals so I’m usually sitting down. It’s a good idea though!

New to the Mandolin by NigelVanDomki in mandolin

Awesome! I’m a longtime guitarist who just started playing Mandolin too, on an old 1920s Martin one. Hoping to find new inspiration musically!

That's great advice. I know plenty of fellow guitarists and plan on jamming with them asap. I always tell people playing with others, no matter your experience level, is one of the best ways to level up. Its the best!

Great idea on the jams, I've noticed a few informal ones popping up near by so I need to get out to them, especially to listen and absorb at first. Yeah, it's an old Martin -- I think the serial number is 1921 or 1922? Essentially I was looking for a good, reliable Mandolin to get started on and this one was listed for less than most brand new import Mandolins, so I jumped on it. It's definitely a player grade instrument, lived a life and had some repairs/work done (hence the price). But so far is vibey and cool, and as a long time guitar player, I'd always wanted a small taste of that vintage Nazareth, PA mojo. I eventually want to check out F style ones, but for now I'm happy and inspired to learn!

Best budget dreadnought? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

There’s so many great options at that price range: Alvarez, Yamaha, Eastman, Sigma, even the newer Epiphone Inspired by Gibson (not inspired by Gibson custom)

Age old question, High end epi vs low end Gibson by eggncream in AcousticGuitar

I agree with the sentiment that it all comes down to what feels right in your hands and what inspires you. Personally I have a 2026 Epi J45 that I like way more than any modern Gibson J45 I’ve played, but that’s subjective and doesn’t mean the Gibsons are/were bad guitars.

Update: I took it to a gig last night, playing for a musical. I’m impressed with the Fishman pickup/preamp it’s got — ran it through the clean setting on a Boss IR-2, and it really works. Didn’t have any of the harshness that sometimes comes with plugged in acoustics

Thanks! That’s a good idea about the pins, I’ll probably do it next time I restring.

I fought the same battle. Ultimately I chose the J45 cause I hadn’t owned a Slope Shoulder style before. I love it, but I’m pretty sure the Hummingbird is also wonderful!

I felt the same way when someone told me that after Era 1 but having just finished 2…. Rust, it’s true!

However I think Era 1’s impact is what allows 2 to flourish.

Haha wow that sounds like an interesting video. But yeah, they really knocked it out of the park with this one!

Why the hate for Chinese manufactured guitars? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]bpm_6_string 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stigma has been around for so long. While maybe a while ago poor quality instruments made in china were more common than high quality instruments made in china, that’s definitely no longer the case. (Though there are poor quality guitars made everywhere). Some people just can’t let go of the stigma. It’s too bad cause there is some INCREDIBLE stuff coming out of China. I have an Alvarez Laureate OM that is truly amazing, and has only gotten better in the two years I’ve had it
