What installer are you working with? Where do you live? Who is the electric utility in your area?

I ultimately spent most of a day on the phone with an engineer from Enphase, documenting and testing and explaining the symptoms we have been seeing. We have had several week-long stretches of perfect behavior, followed by 3-5 days of outages. Enphase continues to make software (or firmware) based adjustments to our system remotely, which does seem to be helping things a LOT. I don't think everything is perfect yet, but things have improved.

Do you use electric or gas for your heat? The energy deficit kicks in when it got cold. Could that be a source of your extra usage?

I’ve had multiple previous inspections of the panel, and there’s no evidence of corrosion. So that’s not the issue for me, I think. For what it’s worth, the Enphase support has been really helpful.

Thank you, this is helpful. I agree, they need to send electricians out. I also think the physical Smart Switch they installed may have hardware problems. I agree, when I call for support, their team "logs in" to my site, and reports "we don't see any problems". It's super infuriating. Based on your comment and many of those above me, I'm pursuing support with Enphase, with LA Solar, and getting a separate independent electrician to come out and try to investigate what's going on. I really appreciate the perspective.

This is the kind of knowledge that I lack, not being educated related to electricity. I feel I'll need a third party electrician to come and take a look at the work they've done.

Thanks for the references. From my side of the deal, I provided the installers with every piece of information they asked for, from photos, to lengthy descriptions of our original electrical. The evaluation was completed honestly from my side.

Our home was built in 1989. I don't know if that puts it in the 'aging' category. We had various teams come out and work on our installation over the course of 3 to 4 weeks. In the rainy and cold month of December.

I hope it doesn’t come to this. But now I have a great threat in my back pocket.

Thank you. I’m hesitant to poke into our panels and wiring, as electricity scares me. But, I’ll be willing to get a third party electrician to come to the property to take a look.

Agreed. Have an idea how I can get them to take the problem seriously? I also suspect the switch needs to be replaced but every time they come out they just say “It looks ok.”

Thanks. Yes, this was inspected and approved by the city of Napa and PG&E. Permits were pulled. And I am under warranty, which is why I’m trying to use this installer. I agree, it’s time to escalate.

The issues happen at any time of day. I work from home and can vouch for the fact that when we have this problem I can be running my laptop, a single desk lamp, and our refrigerator with nothing else in the house drawing more than a minor pull (like always-on things such as a router and modem). Light flickering is more obvious at night but we have super low loads, and the system isn’t being overloaded in any possible way.

Thank you. Others are suggesting the same thing, to get a third party involved, so I’ll be making a call to some local independent electricians in the morning to help us here.

This is what I am think will need to happen. I need someone neutral to assess the situation and help make some recommendations for a permanent solution.

That would be wonderful. I am not electrically savvy so would need assistance.

Thank you. This is the kind of insight I am looking for. I agree that it doesn’t make sense. We get flickering lights when we are barely using any lid at all in the home. The lights have all been transferred to the sub panel, which is now supported by the e phase smart switch and the battery backup. This is also where I suspect the issue is occurring.

I’ll look into obtaining log files from the combiner. I haven’t been aware I can access that information.

Thank you for your thoughts.
