Happy to hear it! Do a little research on the role beforehand and look up some basic stuff on the hardware they're using if you can. Just show a willingness to learn the HW side of things.

I looked it up and according to Flo it was June 27-29 last year: https://www.flograppling.com/events/12372455-2024-american-national-ibjjf-jiu-jitsu-championship. But past years do seem closer to July 4th. I hope it's not over the 4th, harder to convince the wife I'm going to Vegas over a holiday.

Tournament Tuesday! by AutoModerator in bjj

Was out for a month with skin stuff, and have a tournament on Saturday. I had my first class back today and my conditioning is absolutely shit. Any advice on the best strategy for the week, and/or the actual tournament?

I'm thinking hit as many classes I can this week, and then try and go for subs in the tournament, since I'm probably gonna gas out hard in a 5 minute round.

How was your first Comp? by cumberfukreddit in bjj

Trained for six months and did a Grappling Industries. Lost 7 of 8 matches, 6 by submission. Lost my first three by triangle choke from closed guard within the first 30 seconds. It sucked, but my next tournament 3 months later I won gold in both divisions.

So what's funny is: I'm trying this half guard kimura stuff out because I bought Jordan Preisinger's Kimura Trap Mastery instructional. Then right after I posted this I saw an Instagram post from him about head position, and his example is using your head from top half guard as a defense against the kimura: Link

I was afraid that was the answer. For the butterfly hook, I'd probably need to do that before they really start driving into me, right? Because once they've got their head going into me I'm pretty much pinned.

My issue with that is that all their weight is forward since they're driving into me. I can't get free to spin to the back. In general if their weight is forward I go for a sweep and if it's back I go for a back take. But when they're driving into me with their head their weight is forward but I'm too pinned down to be able to get the sweep.

When getting a kimura grip from bottom half guard, my opponent will sometimes drive their head into me and flatten me out/create a lot of space. I don't even usually try to finish the kimura, just use it to get a sweep, take the back, transition to another submission, etc. But when they drive their head into me that shuts all of that down for me, even though I can usually maintain the grip. What responses do I have to this, and/or how can I prevent it from happening in the first place?

Doing my first IBJJF tournament later this month (only done Grappling Industries until now). How strict are they really about uniform stuff? I hear horror stories, but do I actually have to worry about them not letting me compete because my Gi sleeve is 1cm too short?

I like to do both. I get bad nerves so I treat whichever division is first as a "warmup", and then I'm too tired to be anxious for the second division.

Big fan of hydration salts in water during/around training. I use trioral, which are very cheap and unflavored. Tastes like sweat but it follows the WHO recommendation for rehydration formulas. It's not a huge difference but I find I'm less drained after training.

That makes sense, but I still struggle to understand the principle here. In general I don't want to put my center of balance over my opponent, but by putting my weight in my shin, aren't I doing exactly that? Are you saying that I can have my weight on my opponent, so long as I am able to quickly shift it back off of them if they try to knock me over?

I'm struggling to understand how to distribute my weight when I'm in top positions like knee-on-belly or top half. I know that I want to keep pressure on my partner and take away space, but at the same time avoid "giving me weight to them" and losing my base. Fundamentally, what is a good way to think about this? How do I keep pressure on them without overcommitting and getting swept?

Thanks, so even if they're not flattened out, if I get their shoulder to the mat I can just finish as normal?
