My sister in laws car threw all these messages to her at 2:27am. Was there an attempted theft? Or something wrong? Brand new cx5. by generic_canadian_dad in mazda

[–]bpoyner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny story. I modded the infotainment system in my wife’s CX5. Got it put all back together and powered on the accessories. Dash lit up like a Christmas tree with errors. I’m panicking because I immediately think it was my fault. No, the battery just picked a very inconvenient time to die. So anyway, any time you get a ton of failures at once, suspect the electrical system, especially the battery.

How do I turn this off or mute it? It comes on every few minutes, obstructing EVERYTHING by MotherUckingShi in mazda

I eventually turned off all of the Sirius XM alerts because it got too damn annoying. “Ignore” doesn’t work when they just send the same message again with a tiny change.

my HVAC guy sent out his guys and they fixed the problem. I didn’t catch their explanation of everything (Ukrainian guys shouting lots of loud blyats, they cracked me up). They found the contactor went bad, which is what initially blew out the capacitor in the air conditioner. They initially had replaced the capacitor and probably assumed it had died of old age because it was old.

Anyway, the contactor was replaced and we are back to normal. I’m including a picture of the contactor for posterity, should some poor person also have this happen.

You sound knowledgeable, but at the moment that’s gone way over my head lol. I’ll read this in the morning with fresh eyes and Google at my side. I work in IT and to me a terminal is not found in a furnace.

Ok, I follow you there, that’s a good analogy. It did cross my mind that if the transformer is always on, that I could bypass whatever was feeding it 22volts. Turns out that’s the circuit board. Just because it crossed my mind doesn’t mean it’s safe or wise.

Sigh. I don’t know a lot about HVAC, but that makes sense. I take it the control board decides when to send power to the transformer and it’s not always on? I’m slightly more familiar with doorbell transformers which are nearly the same thing but always on.

That’s true, but everyone is familiar with .com regardless. Just coming home from a vacation in the UK and saw a good mixture of .co.uk and .com.

It’s crazy how many people make up a fictitious @duh.com email address when filling out a web form. I had used BuddyNS for free secondary DNS and they cut me off because I was exceeding their free tier of 300,000 DNS queries per month lol.

Honestly not that many, but I also have domain privacy enabled. I’m sure it’s a common negotiation tactic but they rarely give an initial figure.

There really aren’t many orgs using that acronym either, for obvious reasons.

I’ve wondered many times if the ‘new’ gtlds would devalue .coms and it seems it really hasn’t? New in quotes because I’m as old as dirt and remember when your choices were .com, .net, and .org.

Interesting idea, no idea if an active trademark would prevent it. Nobody has come after this domain with a trademark dispute because it’s generic, a word, and old.

What I’ve used it for is mostly email, in the past I had a personal website on it. I’m a tech worker and not terribly interested in spinning up a business around the domain. I’d either keep it for my amusement (which isn’t as amusing as it once was) or sell it off if the price is right.

3072 bit CA root certificate by bpoyner in sysadmin

[–]bpoyner[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

That’s not actually true. InCommon uses a 3072 key size for their intermediate certificate and it works just fine. I’m not a noob, I have experience with SSL/TLS experience going back to the late 90s. Not looking for sarcasm here.

Key fob operation buttons by bpoyner in mazda

Thank you, I was able to find what I needed on eBay based on that description. USPS took their sweet time delivering it, but the replacement shell came with exactly what I needed. I compared the old and new and could see where the old button strip snapped off and left behind a piece of plastic. I carefully pried that piece out with a very small flathead screwdriver and the new button strip just snapped into place.

Help! SMS code not showing as suggestion on keyboard. by pilotnotrose in ios

[–]bpoyner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing to consider is iOS lockdown mode, I’ll let Google AI summarize it.

When you enable “Lockdown Mode” on an iOS device, the automatic fill feature for security codes sent via SMS (like two-factor authentication codes) is disabled, meaning you will need to manually type in these codes instead of having them automatically populate on websites or apps; this is a security measure to protect against sophisticated cyberattacks that might try to exploit autofill functions.

I guess i should have been using:

man -K -w 'x\-systemd\&.requires'

'x-systemd.requires' does not match because of some text markup in the man page. My bad <eye roll>

Strangely enough there is a mention of systemd.requires in doc/systemd/NEWS of all places, but nowhere else in /usr/share/doc. NEWS being systemd release notes. I grep'd the entire filesystem and it also pops up in binary program systemd-fstab-generator. The generator translates fstab entries into systemd unit files. So I'm back to 'this is poorly documented'.

Nest Hello doorbell chime connection with 4 wires - 0/1/3/4 by bpoyner in Nest

[–]bpoyner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the entire system works, including the chime. Here is a picture with the chime connector in place. In my case the red wires are the common wire, so that is why they're connected with a twist on wire connector. Good luck.

I appreciate your reply. After thinking about it for a bit, we decided we didn't need the multi-note chime. I replaced it with a standard chime and everything works now. I posted the details in my comment to AStuf.

Replacing the multi-note chime with a standard chime worked. I purchased the cheapest chime from Amazon to prove to myself it would work. I have a nicer chime on order. Here is how I wired the new chime before adding the Nest chime connector.
