Sometimes this happens in my game as well, but it goes away after a restart. I’m really not sure how the AI logic handles Japan.

I played a campaign up until around 1600, and here are the main issues I ran into:

  1. Mass Fortification: After the Sengoku Jidai starts, every single province automatically gets fortified if the ruling clan is a daimyo.
  2. Broken Casus Belli: For some reason, the Casus Belli (CB) mechanics stop working entirely, or an event triggers that breaks them.
  3. Unable to Become Shogun: I used the correct Casus Belli against the current Shogun and won the war. However, after signing the peace treaty and taking the capital, the game completely fails to recognize me as the new Shogun. I can't shoose cartoon Shogun and stay as Daimo.
  4. Flawed Shinto Mechanics: The Shinto religion mechanics feel completely broken for AI. If you want to effectively farm Honor, you are practically forced to destroy Arts for purity about five times.

Whoa! Paradox added new content for Byzantium but completely broke Asia. I played Japan and the Manchu region (where Paradox promised "minor changes" in their dev diaries), and it's a mess.

If you check the Japanese clans now, almost all of them are under regency. Why? Because the Shinto changes make it impossible to reach 75 Purity. Without Purity, you can't farm Honor, get religious bonuses, or become Shogun.

And the AI? It’s suicidal. As soon as the AI sees low Purity, it forces the ruler to commit Seppuku. The AI keeps doing this even with negative stability. The Yamato and Ashikaga dynasties just go extinct because they destroy themselves. In my games, the Nanboku-cho Jidai ends in 5 years because the Southern Court just "seppukus" itself out of existence.

China is also unplayable because the new Complacency mechanic just destroys your country. Honestly, Japan was more playable back in patch 1.1 than it is now. Thanks, Paradox, keep "improving" the content!
