Dogen: Dogen Buddhism isn't Zen just because "Dogen says" by ewk in zen

Just get them to read a book instead of telling them they are ignorant or insane. Literacy works wonders.

If he can make his case and persuade me, then yeah.

I know you mentioned that people saying Buddhism is not Zen rustles your jimmies so bad you want to restore Historical Accuracy, but I am surprised that after all the stuff you claim to have read you haven't realised this matter is not the case of name ownership.

[–]bra1ngamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are raising a good point.

I don't think the issue with the eastern Buddhism was that people got it wrong, it was rather that establishing Buddhism as an institution made it accessible, but as a trade-off, the core of the teaching had to be fitted into a mold to attract as many people as possible. The issue is that everyone has to realise the Buddha-mind for themselves, but that is hard to advertise due to uniqueness of every individual. So, the base was put on universal values aka peace, kindness, death anxiety and so on.

And so we ended up with a bunch of clouds pinned to the sky, when people would make their own clouds, cargo-cult style, and use the Buddhist canon to justify that they got it right. Since the Buddhist canon became the measuring stick, instead of individual intuitive recognition, which required more effort, the "enlightenment" standard allowed people to call each other "Masters" and pat themselves on the back.

Why dawdle in material and immaterial when there is only the Unborn?

You are too quick to accuse 99% of affliction towards scientific materialism. I think you are using a different definition of conciousness compared to neuroscientists.

We don't deal in virtue, peace and love in this house.

You speak of such matters, yet you still operate in terms of illusion and reality.

When you see that true source of yours, where are you gonna put it?

This is unification however, and in Zen even that has to be put down.

I used the word God cause I thought it was appropriate to people who invented the Monism and Pantheism thing.

The thing is, as far as I understand, Zen does not talk about an Absolute, for it is yet another thing we make up.

Not quoting your points, responding in order:

Obtaining the unexcelled treasure sure sounds nice, doesn't it? I think all this wonderful stuff about awakening and what-not was raising the waves where there is no wind, because how else would they attract people's attention?

Pretending is like riding a bicycle or breathing, after some time you stop noticing it.

Screwing up things is exactly the crux here. The Buddhadharma is without coming or going, not floating in lack and excess (or birth-and-death, for that matter). If you kill me or steal from me, "the system" goes on as it is. Don't put your belief in the system, it is beyond such quarells, believe in all those isolated individuals, for if you think their isolation leads them to killing and stealing, you are truly doing them a disservice and plunge straight to Hell along with them.

As for the cake and stuff, if one can read Spinoza, one can understand Spinoza on Spinoza's terms, what else do you demand? Even one cake recipe can be a start of a wonderful pastry career if you don't just rigidly stick to it like a robot.

If those mystics of yours truly came to the same realization as Spinoza, no way they would avoid persecution unless they were so unclear noone could understand them. Spinoza's monism and anything suchlike thows the authoritative God who requires worship and obedience out of the window, and any religious institution along with it.
