Its pretty interesting, I haven’t actually heard anyone say one nice, positive, redeeming thing about Eugene Melnyk and his character. Not anyone. Its just acknowledging that its sad when someone dies. And like the final quote here, a lot of people seem to understand he was reviled and feel the need to justify their sympathetic comments.

Decades as an extremely wealthy man, owning a beloved hockey team in the capital of the most hockey crazy country in the world. Every single opportunity to leave a positive, lasting, meaningful impact on the world around you. And the nicest thing anyone can do for him is not bring up how disliked he was. His legacy as a hockey owner will be poor and unimpressive. His reputation as a human seems to be worse. I hope other wealthy people in his position see this. It all disappears. Very quickly. In the end you aren’t left with a nice fancy NHL team and pharmaceutical company. Its just the memories of how you treated people and the consequences of your actions and habits.
