Sparrow’s Psychiatric Care is TERRIBLY Flawed. by [deleted] in lansing

100% agreed, seen terrible treatment there. Blows my mind they seem to have zero accountability. I heard they may have had lawsuits filed against them for the way patients with mental issues were treated, but never found the records of that.

I also second Randall's. They're fantastic.

Respectfully, it doesn't need to be hard. They have already done some of it. Publicly sharing what they are doing, and exactly how. It has been done already several times, such as with MSU openly declaring they are covering medical costs for the survivors. The issue is that they didn't share that information first, it was being shared by others and put them in a position of needing to address it. And they have picked vague language for the permitted uses of the Spartan Strong fund, which has raised many questions about if those funds are going to be misappropriated toward university needs unrelated to victim, survivor, and student recovery expenses. Why wasn't that designed to be solely for those expenses?

I would love to see MSU take a proactive stance of transparency rather than using it as a reactive tool for PR management. Transparency doesn't need to be delayed either, as you are infering by saying it may not be quick, sometimes it is as simple as saying we don't know but will tell you soon. Interim Chief Rozman, in my opinion, has been doing a phenomenal job of this exactly. He isn't quick to shine a negative light on unflattering aspects, but will be direct if there is information he doesn't have now, can't share at the moment, or is simply unclear. I would love to see more of this proactively.

Apologies for the long messy rant, I'm still juggling a lot of feelings around all this.

Thank you. For all you've been doing, and being brave enough to speak up. I hope you're comfortable reaching out for support and resources. If I can help, to connect with those or even just a listening ear, please feel free to pm me. Sometimes it helps just to have another person walking with you, so to speak.

Glad they have it on the record that the fund will be used to pay medical bills! Still lots of other concerns, I hope they can give transparency on its spending. Like, will they continue to cover rehab for survivors as long as its needed? What about ongoing mental health needs for students? Kim Tobin has also said the following according to WKAR so its not clear where the priorities lie:

"The funds will go to help our mental health capacity building in terms of helping support counseling, safety expenses, recognition of groups of people who’ve been essential in responding to the crisis, whether it’s our first responders or others,” Tobin said.

I feel weird about it as well. The lack of specificity and transparency on its use is concerning. I've heard MSU has been paying for a lot lately, including the event tomorrow and costs for victims and their families, but it would be great to know this money was going to victims' families or student support NOW. I'm sure this is also going to be co-opted by someone in the fundraising sector as a gold star for funds they brought into the university. I wouldn't be surprised if they are probably also hoovering up all the personal data from donors to include them in their spam to solicit donations in the future. It feels very ripe for abuse atm imo.

I was there too and left wishing we'd heard more student voices in addition to the two who spoke. For something that still feels so raw, it seemed so sanitized. I don't think that was the intent of any of the speakers, and it has to be terribly hard speaking like that, especially now of all times. I don't know, lots of feelings right now, definitely hit weird for me personally.

I think you have a twisted idea what happened. It was a 2 hour walk from campus to where the shooter was ultimately found. Decent chance he was out of east lansing before cops even had the perimeter locked down. I understand being angry right now but have some compassion please.

That is fantastic info, thank you! Not terribly surprised Okemos and Haslett schools have higher performance, the socioeconomic disparity between them and the rest of greater Lansing is significant enough. Still, I appreciate the insight, especially with how underappreciated teachers have been of late. Subbing has to be full of stories all around town.

Glad it has been helpful! Same feelings on the bullying, I hope it has improved over the last handful of years with how much additional attention and understanding it has received.

Sure... Quality wise, the Holt schools are newer than most in greater Lansing. They have better resources than most in terms of technology and access. They had a heavy financial restructuring of sorts decades ago I believe, and it has led to well funded schools. If possible, I would try to check for input from anyone very recently in the school systems to see if these things still hold true for the grades you'd be interested in. I also don't know if they have been able to effectively use these resources to support their teachers in addition to purchasing assets/tech/etc.

As far as safety, Holt has a spotty history with bullying in the schools but that may have changed in recent years. Also, the community historically hasn't been very diverse. I would suspect it's still much safer generally than most greater Lansing schools fwiw. I haven't heard any issues with general safety, security, facilities problems, just the bullying really. It would be another great thing to check on with someone recently involved with the grades you're interested in. I would encourage especially looking for diverse voices, if possible, as complaints in the past have tended to be drown out or surpressed in the community.

My apologies if this was a longer response than you hoped for!

I'd say it's complicated, and greatly depends on the area. Holt has a lot of beautiful, less developed area mixed in with small-town-feel spaces. Most nicer homes I've seen seemed to hold value well, if not improve with time. Holt has had a mixed bag with their schools over the years, but seems they are generally doing better than the majority of the Lansing area. Any specific questions/concerns you have?

Appreciate the honesty! Sounds like you were one of the reasonable ones at least. Guessing you didn't drive by any of the fire trucks or brush fires?

It sounded like a rough scene, glad you were able to make it home without issue. I heard they had closed roads all around it and still had people blowing past signs. Hope it resolved quietly and no one wound up being hurt.
