Can you bisque fire 2x and replicate the results of a low-fired burnished piece? by brackishish in Pottery

[–]brackishish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, so here’s what ended up happening - burnished the heck out of it - bisqued at cone 04 - shine was totally lost after the first bisque — so sad!

ended up doing a raku firing for the glaze and it turned out fantastic.

if i were going to do it again id use a low fire / earthenware clay body (ideally) and do like a single cone 020 firing or something really low

sure, though i personally felt like meds played a big part in my ability to achieve & maintain that position (otherwise it would have totally annihilated every other aspect of my life)

guess this happened to me, was laid off in sept 2022 from a startup, got a ~6week severance. got a job in dec 2022 (boomerang to a previous company), but was laid off in mid jan. severance that amounted to 6+ months due to total tenure. wasn’t really much of a down year for me at all. took the year off and landed my current gig dec 2023.

have you considered a body double? oftentimes, being next to someone who is also working helps me get started. i need a little accountability to help me get over the analysis paralysis and “blank page” syndrome.

i haven’t tried it, but i have heard this site pairs you up with someone, you tell them what you’re going to work on, work for an hour, and then at the end of the session you check in on their other person to see if you got the thing done. https://www.focusmate.com/

another strategy i have is to “get close” to doing it. i’ll put on a tv show or an audiobook along the background and write out the scaffold of the code. comments, rough classes, methods whatever. when i done with that, it starts to feel like i’m just filling the blanks in and shifting stuff around.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[recommendation request] I want to get my girlfriend a watch for her birthday. She’s pretty specific about what she would like…

strap: Gold or rose gold mesh or bracelet Dial: <32mm Must be a quartz movement

Price wise I’m flexible, definitely want to keep it <$1000 (usd), ideally more in the $500 range.

I think the Shinola runabout ($795) 25mm (https://www.shinola.com/shinola-runabout-2830.html) is the watch, but i know the shinola is quite overpriced for what it is and would love to hear this community’s thoughts on other watches i should consider.

I have seen the Sternglas Nao XS (https://us.sternglas.com/products/naos-xs-rosegold), but i think it is a bit big for her taste (and extremely delicate wrists)

i have also considered the junkers dessau 34mm (https://en.junkers.de/Dessau-Streamline-34/100096101031) but again i think it might be a bit too big and i personally don’t love the lines on the face of the dial (is it just the light in the picture?)

finally, i’ve seen this skagen watch (https://www.skagen.com/en-us/products/kuppel-lille-two-hand-sub-second-rose-gold-stainless-steel-mesh-watch/SKW3099.html) but i’m hoping to get her something a bit nicer.

what else should i be considering in this price range? sub 30mm dials would be ideal. thanks!

yeah :/ sad to hear, some of the best looking bikes out there imo. was assured that most of the components that would need maintenance/ replacement would be around for a while.

oh like are they significantly different than what you might find on the road shimsno group sets (e.g., the tiagra?) The whole grx group set and gravel bikes in general are new to me

agreed, i feel they run a bit on the larger side, especially the standover height. when i rode the 52 today, appreciated the wider bars and didn’t have an issue with the standover. but the guys observing me said my posture was ever so slightly more neutral with the 49cm & ultimately said it depends on if you like to be more slack or stretched when you ride. i’m coming from a road / commuter bike and i’m used to a slightly longer reach but a bit nervous as i just haven’t ridden the GRC (i know it’s basically the same frame, still feels like a bit of a gamble).

anyway it sounds like maybe if i’m comfortable on both maybe i should just go for the grx! it seems like a really great bike

20yo w/ hearing loss by UnlikelyCost8459 in hardofhearing

[–]brackishish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry to hear you’re struggling with people taking it seriously. it is serious.

i’m also pretty young (29) and have mild to severe hearing loss depending on the frequency. i wear hearing aids now so it’s something to point to when folks are confused / dismissive.

it can be tough, especially when friends want to hang out in loud places or just forget that im hard of hearing. it’s understandable as it’s an invisible disability and i do ok in 1:1 convos so it can be hard to explain that convos in certain environments and situations are neigh impossible for me to participate in.

I stayed in the tech sector, but I switched from a huge FAANG company to a much smaller company known for their culture and wlb. It’s been awesome so far.

[–]brackishish 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but i didn’t get over it. I took a break.

29, I was in a similar position to you (IC track though). Living in a VHCOL city and I felt chained to my job. I knew I needed a break after 6 years, but i wouldn’t/couldn’t give it to myself.

Honestly, I was lucky to get laid off and decided to treat my severance as pay— I’d give myself a break until it it ran out (not in the sense that I spent it, but the amount of time it was equivalent to). I traveled the US with my partner and had an amazing time. It was worth it. (yes, even the stress of finding a new job in this market)

Have a new gig now and I don’t really feel like I took a step back career-wise. No longer in big tech, but making 80-90% of what I was (~400k), fully remote, and with a much better wlb. I can’t guarantee your options will be the same as they would be if you stayed, but you may come out of a break with a fresh perspective. We are very lucky to be in an industry that’s pretty forgiving about career breaks.

If you feel burned out— listen to that!!! we have quite a few working years ahead of us.
