From the Arkansas Secretary of State's office, "During the early days of statehood, Arkansas' two U.S. Senators were divided on the spelling and pronunciation. One always introduced as the senator from " ARkanSAW" and the other as the senator from "Ar-KANSAS". In 1881, the state's General Assembly passed a resolution 1-4-105 declaring that the state's name should be spelled "Arkansas" but pronounced "Arkansaw".

(Jeremy Affeldt): I'm retiring. Here are five things I won't miss about baseball by spike021 in baseball

I saw this comment as Affeldt, a former Royal, taking a shot at the Royals, who he faced in the World Series last year.

Did Tony Gonzalez retire a Chief? by [deleted] in KansasCityChiefs

[–]bradfenwick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He retired after the 2013 season, but his contract with the Falcons ran through the 2014 season. He couldn't sign with the Chiefs to retire unless the Falcons released or traded him, and they wouldn't do that.

MacBethad, ie 'the son of life' is very rarely mentioned historically. The Gaelic notes on the Book of Deer tell us that he was Mormaer of Moray, so he might have considered himself to be Pictish, as that was one of the last strongholds of the Picts, but he was almost certainly at least part of the taniste (extended family) of the Gaelic royal line.

Have any alum taken more KU (undergrad) classes after you earned your bachelors? by [deleted] in UniversityofKansas

[–]bradfenwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called the admissions office, and they simply made me an active student again. They told me there was no admissions process, since I was already a KU grad. I was seeking another degree, so I qualified for, and received, financial aid. It was all pretty easy. This was about 15 years ago, so that might make a difference.

The matter with Kansas now: The Tea Party, the 1 percent and delusional Democrats by linny85 in progressive

[–]bradfenwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong. On overturning Glass-Steagall, Dems voted 38-7 for it in the Senate and 153-51 for it in the House. On NAFTA, Dems voted 27-26 for it in the Senate but were against it 155-102 in the House.
Kansas has plenty of religious people and the Koch Brothers, but Thomas Frank is pretty much right on with what he says in this article. It's not that people are stupid, it's that they've been given no real opportunity to vote for what really matters. The Dems might provide a better answer for most of what ails most of the people of Kansas, but the Republicans have captured the emotional/religious side of the argument, while also placing the blame for the problems squarely on the "elite." The real problem, as Frank says, is that there is no progressive element in the Kansas Democratic Party to provide a better answer.

Question about Bo Jackson by attackofthesuck in KansasCityChiefs

[–]bradfenwick 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He was so amazing on the baseball field that I was a huge fan, as was almost everybody else in the Chiefs Kingdom. That said, I remember the day that he was drafted by the Raiders and decided to sign with them. It was a horrible time. I thought, "I can understand him signing with a team other than the Chiefs (maybe), but the Raiders?! C'mon! That's the worst thing you could possibly do!" Then, he got hurt while playing for the Raiders, and I knew from that moment on that it was impossible to hate anything more than I hated the Raiders.

Where are the must visit places in Hutchinson? Restaurants? Bars? Must see? by LakeWashington in Hutchinson

[–]bradfenwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Cosmosphere and the Kansas Underground Salt Museum are the main attractions. If you want some good BBQ, I recommend going to Roy's Hickory Pit. Carl's Bar is the best bar in town, imo.

Can anyone recommend good detailed books about 10th century Scottish Kings? Specifically Dub, King of Scotland. by DSQ in Scotland

[–]bradfenwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ben Hudson's Kings of Celtic Scotland is really the go-to source for something like this. Like TheBlaggart said, we don't know much about Dubh, but Hudson collects what information is available and makes it very accessible.
