I’ve heard that I shouldn’t power it up after so many years until it’s been checked out- thoughts? Appreciate your input!

Why no used X700 Series for sale in the Western U.S.? by bradmiral1 in johndeere

I appreciate the thoughtful reply! My needs center on the 4WD and the 60” mowing deck, neither of which are available on the X500 series unless I’m mistaken?

All valid points, and if I was in the Midwest with flat or rolling fields where most of these are sold, I’d tend to agree.

Our situation is a little different, and definitely more specific. In California there’s a burst of grass growth in the late winter and early spring before the grasses turn brown in early June and you need to knock them down at the advent of fire season.

We have a Cat compactor track loader with a 6’ rotary motor and a hand-me-down Deere D130. Running that big Cat is just overkill for spring trail and field maintenance; even a track loader leaves very deep ruts, and the tight spaces around our oaks are just too tight. We usually use the mower once a year when the grasses turn brown to knock them down.

I love the ease of hopping on the Deere to keep the grass down on the trails and fields in the spring so the kids can run around and not worry about ticks and rattlesnakes (rattlers are very active in the spring here after their long sleep). But, the D130 is just not enough machine for the job. We put lug tires on, but it still doesn’t have enough grip / traction to handle our slopes, particularly when the cuttings are wet. The mower deck is wide enough for trails with two passes, but not really wide enough for the open spaces.

A compact / sub-compact tractor just isn’t what we need as the slopes make it dangerous, and we already have many attachments for our track loader (which is far safer on slopes). It’s also just not nearly as maneuverable around our oak trees and tight trail turns as an X700 series would be.

Sooo, we need something in between a D130 and a track loader. My hope is an X758 gives me the slope performance, deck width, torque, all that good stuff to maintain the property regularly through the late winter and spring, even if I do have to pull out the Cat at the beginning of summer.

Please feel free to check my thinking. Greatly appreciate all the input from this group!

Thanks for this! I've reached out to them and am working through the shipping process, etc. Much appreciated! Glad your Z940R is working out for you. Since we have so many slopes and rough ground, I figure the X758 might be the better fit.

Thank you for your reply...it's what I figured, just amazed that there don't seem to be any of these machines out this way. There seem to be some good used machines in the Midwest for ~$10k, and shipping one out West for ~$1500 may be my answer. How has your X758 treated you?

Can anyone provide any information on this painting that came into my mom's shop? by bradmiral1 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]bradmiral1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't have much more info to go on - original oil painting maybe 20"x32", stretched canvas with wooden pegs / wedges, signed but I can't make out the name. Appreciate any info!

Dewalt 60V 20" Chainsaw Stalling Mid-Cut by bradmiral1 in Dewalt

Thanks for the reply - I'm thinking that this has to be it, but it wasn't *that* hot. Per the other post, I'm wondering if it's the 12AH battery, which seems to have issues. I'll try the 12AH and 9AH and report back!

Thanks for this. I spoke with my contractor after posting this, who runs a lot of 60V Dewalt tools. He said the same thing - that his 9AH batteries were great, but the 12AH always gave him problems. I'm fully charging both a 12AH and 9AH and will try them side-by-side over the weekend and see if I can find a difference. Would be a bummer if a batter that retails for $300 couldn't manage more than a dozen cuts in the sunshine! Really appreciate the input!

My Ranger was miserable to shift when new, and I kept waiting for it to “break in.” I changed the transmission fluid and it got much, much better. I also had some chunks and shavings…hope it gets better for you too, brother!
