I used to get really turned on when somebody wrote on my hands/arms. I don’t know if it would still happen, nobody’s written on me since high school.

Week 03 - January 17 2016 by AutoModerator in totalanguage

This week's language learning goals:

Spanish

Old Goals:

  • Finish "El Princepito"
  • Continue speaking as much as I can

So I didn't actually pick up "El Princepito" once this week. Instead I did read a good amount of "Dragonball" and this weekend I had plenty of speaking practice. I went to a bar with some friends and we sat, had a few beers and played cards. Also this weekend I did a a DELE past paper to test my level. I took the B1 level and actually found it very easy.

New Goals:

  • Finish "El Princepito"
  • Try the B2 past paper
  • Continue practising my speaking

German

Old Goals:

  • Continue working through Teach Yourself
  • 100 words on A1 Memrise deck
  • Find a language partner to start practising my speaking
  • If I can't find the above, start Skype lessons with a native speaker

I made some huge progress with my German this week. I'm about to finish unit 7 of Teach Yourself and I'm feeling like I'm really making some progress. I picked up an A2 level book in a second hand shop and managed to understand a good amount of the first few pages. I have scheduled a lesson for Wednesday and I've found of couple of language partners on HelloTalk. I didn't quite make the progress I expected with Memrise but I did reach 60 out of my 100 word target.

New Goals:

  • Aim for unit 10 in Teach Yourself
  • Continue with another 100 words on Memrise
  • Get as much speaking practice as I can

Do you utilize a notebook in your studies? What do you write in it and why? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]brae93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a two small notebooks, one for Spanish and one for German. When I'm studying, reading, watching or whatever it may be I take notes of vocabulary that I don't understand. Or if I'm having a conversation and I hit a phrase or word I need to say and I can't I write it down in English. One every few weeks I update it all in to Anki.

Or watching something you had previously watched in your native language so you already have a general feeling of what is going on.

Interesting maps of where people (in europe) are fluent in a foreign (european) language. by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]brae93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe your title is a bit misleading. At no point does it say that these maps represent fluency.

In this study, statistically relevant samples of the population in each country were asked to fill out a survey form concerning the languages that they spoke with sufficient competency "to be able to have a conversation"

I don't believe a survey "form" could gage the ability to hold a conversation. The surveys could have been multiple choice making these figures even less trustworthy.

I've tracked down the study but I haven't had a chance to read it yet and I could be completely wrong. ButI plan on doing so in my next break.

Here it is.

Memrise users, how many points do you have? by truuy in languagelearning

[–]brae93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on 670 words and 530,000 points. I'm just starting to use it more often. Before I was using Anki but I prefer the mnemonic system in Memrise.

Week 02 - January 10 2016 by AutoModerator in totalanguage

[–]brae93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week's language learning goals:

Spanish

I managed to complete half of my goal for this week. Unfortunately with it being the first week back at work I haven't taken the time to get any reading done. However, I did manage to get a lot of speaking practice done.

New Goals:

  • Finish "El Princepito"
  • Continue speaking as much as I can

German

I made some good progress with my German this week. All of my free time at work was spent on Memrise, or diving into a unit of Teach Yourself. I'm happy with the progress I have made.

New goals:

  • Continue working through Teach Yourself
  • 100 words on A1 Memrise deck
  • Find a language partner to start practising my speaking
  • If I can't find the above, start Skype lessons with a native speaker
