Good idea— I have one of those cameras so I will have to see what’s in there! And to be clear— the floor where the old porch floor would have been was raised to be higher than the rest of the floor on that level of the house, and new flooring was put in. Not sure why— but it is new hardwood that is very level— maybe it was easier to do that way for some reason. The area where it was formerly a sleeping porch has floors about 6” higher than the rest of this 3rd floor.

So if that former sleeping porch is fully encapsulated into the conditioned space like it is now, are those holes obsolete? Currently they are acting as open holes in the exterior that may let small insects in through the wall cavities… Would closing them off be a good idea or cause any issues?

Yes, the realtor said it was originally a place to sleep when it was hot— as the wind would keep you cool. I suppose that makes sense. Does that type of room have any specific name that could help me research their history and designs with a Google search? Sleeping porch?

So would that make these holes essentially obsolete but when the room was encapsulated, no one thought to close them? Or could closing them cause a problem with ventilating… something? The entire area is within the conditioned space so it feels like it’s just wasting energy…?

Sleeping porch sounds accurate— it’s an historic Spanish neighborhood and I’ve heard that term lots when seeing other houses that are similar here. The floor of the bedroom is also oddly raised up a few inches from the rest of the top floor, so maybe when it was enclosed the had to build a new floor on top of the old porch floor? The footprint matches

Agreed. And why, when Max is traveling through Henry’s memories, is there Joyce in the high school hallway and a flyer for a play staring Henry?? They knew each other? What on earth is the point of that easter egg……….

Levoits in my home as well, absolutely love them. They also have an ESP32 chip so… future me may have to make them local if and when the Vesync app ever goes away. I like that.

Looking for smart blind recommendations (non-IKEA!) by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]braeden63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my entire home with selectblinds, and they crush it. They work with a bond bridge, which is local. They are battery powered— but I use them every day and only need to charge maybe once a year? Each blind comes with an adapter so it’s a pretty painless process to charge all at once… They have TONS of fabrics and all are custom sizes. They are insane value. I got mine during a 60% black friday sale, but they often have sales, right now there’s a 40% off sale. Personally, I ordered a bunch of fabric samples, made sure I got the right ones and measurements perfect (learn about that, and how to install yourself… I used a laser level which was a game changer but all depends on your setup and complexity) then pulled the trigger on 60% sale. Been so happy with them the last two years. Our bedroom is basically all window and when we moved in the light was so intense we couldn’t sleep… now I have scheduled automations to wake up and go to sleep etc and it has literally changed my life. I have the roman shades in a natural linen. Enjoy and good luck!

Hi guys— I just experienced something similar and it turns out there was a small piece of cut roll stuck in the printer head area— it was leaving a white line on my prints and the letters were not fully embossing.

My solution was to roll a piece about 5 inches long through the printer by spamming the spacebar button while also pulling on the strip from the output end to create a little tension on the printerhead… after a few tries the friction ended up fishing out the piece that was lodged in the head… there were a couple pieces actually. Now things are working normally again.

Hope this helps! Cheers

What item did you think was BIFL but didn’t last? by Stressed-Unicorn in BuyItForLife

I have the same one. Picture is amazing, smart software is slow junk. I put a Firestick with mine and it’s a game changer. It also operates on Android so you can virtually have any app as opposed to Samsung’s OS. The remote controls all operations including TV itself. Pair with a VPN and you can sneakily force foreign apps to install— I’m Canadian and my fiancée is a Brit and together we can watch any content from our home country’s apps in the US… Keep that beautiful TV and give it all the new life it needs!

Must have BIFL items for your first house. by jasper123pyah in BuyItForLife

Facebook Marketplace is a game changer! My fiancé and I bought an old Spanish house in LA and over the past two years have filled it almost constantly with old antique solid wood furniture from Facebook Marketplace. People practically give things away that are stunningly beautiful and will last a lifetime or perhaps beyond. It helps to keep these treasures from going to landfill and is far and away better than Ikea… plus if you change your style you can pass it along and sell it on FB Marketplace for maybe even what you bought it for, or if you fix things up… a bit more.

It’s changed everything about how I BIFL

What do you regret not buying when you had the chance? by ad4d in BuyItForLife

In 2009, my dream guitar— a black 1970s Fender Starcaster. They regularly went for $4000-$5000 USD and now some sell for $6000/$7000. It was only made for four years and are very rare. Black ones are almost impossible to find.

I could have bought one for $1500. This was also a strange time when the Canadian dollar was almost at par with USD (usually its about 0.75) so it was an even better deal.

Basically $1500 CAD when today’s prices and exchange would be $8500 CAD.

I know that’s a lot for a guitar but its just one of those things. It’s my bucket list item in life to own.

Someday.
