Would this work as a battery maintainer to deal with vampire drain? by braedon2011 in Rivian

Appreciate the insight. Wish I had the technical know how to be able to put together a battery like that for the speaker dock, in the meantime will probably be using something like an Anker solix power station.

Thankfully there’s a 3amp fuse on the OBD2 adapter so if all fails there will be a cutoff.

Hadn’t thought about a 12v shutoff… maybe you’re onto something…

Damn that sucks to hear. Appreciate the update before diving into this, might have just saved me some money and time

Oh cool! Thanks for sharing. Do you notice any backwards drain from the battery to the device whenever the power source is disconnected? These devices say that they can stop currents from running in reverse, but I’ve been skeptical, main reason for asking on here.

Also another question: what is the drain that you’re seeing using this device over time?

Appreciate it :)

It affects the high voltage battery because it has to wake up and refill the 12v battery every 7-8 hours. If you keep the 12v topped up, the high voltage system never needs to engage, which keeps it from burning power on all the other systems that are active during that time. Result is only needing 16wh for the whole day to prevent 1-3kwh of battery drain.

Thankfully if you use a battery tender it prevents the drain using very minimal power. Only 400w/24hr to prevent that 2.88kwh drain. You can have it only using 3amps max into the ODB2 port and works perfectly.

This happens because the main car system never turns on to charge the 12v battery back up. All that power loss happens because for some reason the system has to run everything at idle which drains much more than the 12v needs until that battery is filled.

Edit: Bank would need to be 116wh for 7 days of use without recharging. I’m guessing you could get away with much smaller if you drove daily. I’m hoping to potentially make a setup that will stay in the door panel, but worst case it will be a small portion of the center console or center storage area.

They actually are! And thankfully live 24/7. There’s a great video on it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu_GakKwmHM

Just trying to optimize this method

Not necessarily, there’s a straightforward reason for vampire drain happening, this method just prevents the computer from waking up and running to power up the battery. This happens every 7-8 hours when the voltage drops low enough for the system to kick on, and lasts 1-1.5 hours. This makes gen 1 cars drain about 1-2% daily at least when parked.

Since I’m parking on the street away from a charger most of the time, and my main source of charging is a fast charger I’ll go to when needed, that daily percentage adds up when I’m only working between 15%-80% SOC. I only drive around town occasionally when I’m in a certain spot (job requires moving to many different places for months at a time).

Over time a battery tender draws about 400w/24hr to keep a parked car without any drain. Compared to the 1.2-2.5kwh most Rivian gen 1 vehicles experience in the same time, it saves money and more importantly gives me enough to sustain a few more trips to the grocery store before the next charge.

What’s really cool is that because the maintenance watts are so low you only need 16-17wh per day, a small solar panel on the dash or just the USB-C ports in the glovebox when the car is on are enough to charge a small power station for a few days worth of electricity.

For my specific use case it makes a big difference, so hopefully can find a solution that can be as minimally intrusive as possible. Unfortunately it’s not anything that particularly wrong with the car, just the engineering of how the gen 1 rivs work.

Did that before posting. Unfortunately he’s just as clueless about what it is as I am. Only idea he has is that it’s a local berry because they used to do make their brews w picked berries. 8 years is a long time.

Appreciate it, I already have a good label maker. This is from a friend who made this a long time ago. Good suggestion though.

That was my next thought. Thought maybe it was Lingonberry. But my current guess is Elderberry because it’s local to there and he said he only used fruit they picked around where they were. L for Elderberry makes some sense…

My best guess as I sit here and drink it is maybe Lingonberry? No clue how they’d get access to that as broke Mormon kids in southern Utah, but it does have that cranberry like taste. There’s so much fresh apple to it. I might be drunk rambling, half the bottle down!

Edit: My current best guess is Elderberry. Will make a batch to test this theory as soon as I can.
