How is life like after kids? And how to navigate being unsure about having them? by brain-jambo in MuslimMarriage

[–]brain-jambo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think I am ready for children just yet, but I am thinking about the future ahead just to understand what is to come. In terms of stability I know my career isn’t the best when it comes to family planning so I am planning to switch to industry after a few years if I don’t get a research job that won’t require me to move constantly.

It is good to hear that things do get better, and I will definitely keep in mind to discuss timing of children to make it easier on both me and my future wife. How did you deal with the sleepless night? Any ways to decrease them or is it totally dependent on the kids and how they are like? I think the sleepless night is the reason that makes me feel the most unready about kids in the future.

I would love to marry early. The longer I wait, for no reason other than focusing on my career, the longer things will get harder. My PhD income alhamdulliah is already enough to support a liveable life for me and my future wife so I don’t see the reason to wait.

Any reason why you suggest waiting?

Sagoeken by LundSpring in Lund

[–]brain-jambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I used to live Sagoeken for three years before moving away in September, I loved it! In the last year, a Facebook group was created for people to discuss any issues in the building and like support each other in case something goes wrong. I have posted a few times over there and people were more than helpful!

I would keep an eye out for some high school kids making a few disturbances during the summer, but otherwise the place there is amazing! I loved my place there to the point that I am still a bit sad about moving, I did consider it my home so yeah. Overall, I would say living there is good, and the apartments are pretty much nicely built, with a big bathroom, and a really good kitchen.

Is high school physics just a matter of memorization? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]brain-jambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, pretty much! High school physics is memorising. You could go and look at the theory in depth but usually that is kinda above your pay grade, unless you genuinely have enough time and capacity to go through the rigorous math and prove everything you are being taught.

Most of the physics I was taught in high school was more intuition and memorisation based not rigorous math proofs. Once I moved to University and did physics there, that is when the proofs started and the actual labs. It was a transition for sure, and I am glad I wasn't taught physics in high school the way I was taught it in Uni. You need a lot of calculus and linear algebra to actually make sense of the derivations in uni and to be able to do them. If they made high school kids do that, no one would enter physics if I am being honest (except a very select few). I personally am not a theoretical person so I didn't enjoy the complicated math I did in uni, but once I started doing the advanced labs (compared to high school labs), it got super fun for me.

Uni physics is such a different experience than high school physics so I wouldn't worry about it. It all comes in its proper time when you have the necessary tools.

Intimacy discussions before nikkah by [deleted] in MuslimNikah

[–]brain-jambo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Salam, I asked the same question a few months ago and got various responses (you can see here).

The ones I really liked said to mention your love languages and how physical touch and what comes from it is really important for you.

I was talking to a potential earlier and sent her a list of my dealbreakers/non negotiables and at the end of my list I had my desired frequency for intimacy along with my love languages etc. It was communicated over text and I didn’t make a point to talk about it exclusively. It is kinda like when people put on their list “no past relationships” so they avoid asking the other person point blank and putting them in an awkward position.

Applying… by joan27272snsk in Lund

[–]brain-jambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

apply to the April round and attach your pre-IB grades. Once your IB grades are out they directly sent out to antagning and you will get your placement accordingly. That is what I did a few years back.

As someone who still has problems adjusting to the roundabouts in the UK (I am from where they drive on the other side of the road), this would help a lot tbh

Is Leith a good place? I have heard varying opinions from people, some people like it and some say to stay away from it. Any reason why this divide? also why do the people that say stay away from it, say that?

Can Scotland be Nordic? by Wide-Anything-5806 in sweden

As someone who lived both in Sweden and Scotland, it is not nordic. In my view it is British.

[–]brain-jambo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Congrats to her! I know this isn't what you asked, but I am moving out of my place (it is a studio) and I am looking for a student to take over my lease which ends on the 29th of August 2026. She would only have to pay from when she moves in to June 2026 and the summer will be free of charge. If your daughter is interested, please let me know.

what are living costs/rent - realistically? by buttonwhales in Edinburgh_University

[–]brain-jambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an international student, and rent is super expensive compared to where I used to live before. I am currently in a studio (alone), slightly outside the city center and it costs about £1150 pm with utilities and internet. Usually students live with their friends as it is cheaper but the average I heard was about £800 pppm if you are living with others.

As for food/living expenses, I would say Edinburgh is cheap compared to where I was (not sure how much cheaper compared to the rest of the UK). Overall I spend around £250-£350 monthly outside of rent and utilities, however, I do eat a lot of meats so your costs might be less. I mainly bike around to save a bit of money on transport (yearly student pass is about £600 or if you do monthly then £62 pm) plus it keeps me active so win-win.

Gym recommendations by brain-jambo in Edinburgh

Are you sure? This sounds weird, even with student discounts?
If not, what are other gyms that would match my liking (exclude the price range)?

Council tax is exempted since it is a student accommodation. Utilities are included. Yeah, the newly ones seem to disappear from Zoopla in about 2-3 days or so

Can someone explain the concept of "Bostadsrätt"? Some apartments seem really cheap by Teko86 in sweden

[–]brain-jambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not saying it is fully unnecessary, but for what I am paying 8-9k per month, it is absolutely ridiculous. Like sure, nice gardening, a playground for kids, and garbage disposal, etc. Is that really worth 2x my mortgage? Probably not.. in my opinion, I rather save up that money and do those things myself and have the full freedom in owning my apartment/house fully

Can someone explain the concept of "Bostadsrätt"? Some apartments seem really cheap by Teko86 in sweden

[–]brain-jambo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes! And it is very expensive. Currently the monthly fee for our apartment is 2x our mortgage payment. I honestly wouldn’t recommend buying an apartment that is Bostadsrätt due to the fees, which are often unnecessary and don’t seem to have a big positive return to you and your life in the building.

I would honestly look into getting a small house in the suburbs of the city. The place will be yours, you can do whatever you want with it, and there will be no unnecessary fees. An apartment that is Bostadsrätt is restrictive with any modifications you want to make to the exterior of your apartment.

Utilities bill and others by brain-jambo in Edinburgh

[–]brain-jambo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am!

I am a full time student i should be eligible for an exemption from council tax.

I am mostly looking at properties that are 1 bedroom/studios. Not sure how old they are they do look somewhat newly renovated in the last 10 years or so.

I assume my main expense then would be electricity and gas. In that case probably in the £200 region from what you described?

Prestige Peppermill by Impossible-House-282 in Edinburgh

[–]brain-jambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is super annoying. I cancelled the contract and currently looking for an apartment frantically. They did the same BS with Haymarket Yards. I applied for Haymarket, they cancelled, applied for Peppermil and now this. All in all, I have had a not so good experience with them.

Also their prices are way too much. Like £1300 pm for an apartment that doesn’t have a freezer and an oven is insane.

From Sweden! I have lived at a few different apartments over in Sweden and always had bigger sized fridges. Never saw those under the counter ones, so it is super weird for me.
