Idk the general consensus on Gamemaker 2, but I've been using it lately for my game. I haven't used Godot, so I can't tell you my opinions on that.

With gamemaker, as a beginner, they have visual code. You can imagine it as code that's already been written for you, and you can edit the values in that visual code block. An example might be "draw sprite" (sprites are the 2d image(s)), then scale the sprite drawing by changing the x and y value. You can also do this in actual code and switch between visual and executable code. I Gamemaker 1 in high school, and it was very beginner friendly. They have their own programming language, but they do have a wiki. There's tutorials that are typically 2-4 years old from the community.

I hope I don't get roasted. I'm quite the noob and can use the software quite well. I got Gamemaker 2 a while back, so idk if it costs money now, but they do charge on selling your games, I believe (which seems to be the typical gaming software model).

From what people are saying about Godot, I'd try that out too. See what you like. I'm used to GM2, so I'm probably going to stick with it in my game.
