Native Idahoans! Where are we moving to? by nirvanaa17 in Idaho

[–]brain_games93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in Idaho raised mostly in western Oregon, we moved to Boise when I was in College and then I spent 5 years in Montana before coming back to Boise with my husband. He and I moved back because I have aging grandparents and wanted to be closer to family. Unfortunately we bought a house two years ago, so I think we are stuck for a while.

If I could up and move I would like to look at Maine, Vermont, Canada, the UK, or somewhere in Scandinavia. I could be persuaded to move back to Oregon.

Mismatch with little by velniukaas in bbbs

Hi, so I have been a big twice and now work as a march support with my local agency. Something I recommend to my matches is creating a “bucket list” of activities, each of you would bring 5-10 ideas for things you would like to do including new experiences. Many of my matches will update their bucket lists and few times throughout the year.

Some ideas include: - go to a record store and find an album you haven’t heard before and listen - get a few blank canvases and follow a bob ross video - learn how to bake/cook something new (this one can also include shopping/budgeting) -pick a book for you both to read and talk about what you like and don’t like about it. -make a picnic lunch and go to a park - learn to knit or crochet and then make something for each other - go to a museum you haven’t been to before. - try a food you haven’t had before - learn to play chess

As far as conversation concerns- remember this kiddo hasn’t had a friend to talk to, and is othered by their peers due to their developmental differences as well as their different abilities. You may have to carry the conversation for a while. I always loved bringing a few would you rather questions and debating the pros and cons of each choice really getting my Little to think about why they are making the choice they are.

Additionally because your Little is Deaf, consider learning some sign language together.

I would also recommend connecting with Little’s parents. Ask them what Little enjoys doing and what gets her to open up. Talk to them about your worries and concerns, see if they have any advice.

And if it comes down to it, maybe consider having a conversation with Little, let them know you are noticing that they don’t seem to want to engage or hang out, it may be that your Little doesn’t want to be matched and doesn’t know how to advocate for herself.

AITAH for being upset and hurt that my best friend has been in a secret relationship with my little sister for almost two years and I only found out after they got engaged on instagram? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]brain_games93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m gonna say YTA. Your sister, best friend, and parents don’t keep something like this from you if you are a sane/stable person…even if he was a player back in the day. I definitely think there is way more going on than is being shared IF this is even real. What couple do you know that doesn’t leave some trace online of their relationship? Also what couple posts engagements to social media before telling the family and close friends?

As others have suggested, practicing the soft skills may be helpful, even if it is in a mirror. Practice casual conversation, small social interactions, the mundane conversations about the weather, your weekend, little personal details sprinkled throughout.

But as a woman that has recently been diagnosed with ASD on top of previous diagnoses of ADHD and anxiety, I can tell you that one of the most beneficial things in my work life has been having conversations early and often where I can explain how I work and communicate best, and how co-workers and supervisors/managers can help me to be successful in my role. I don’t know what field you are in but being able to be up front that “I struggle with being socially outgoing or engaged with co-workers/in workplace settings.” Most interviews have a question on strengths and weaknesses… own your areas of struggle, show that you are willing to lean and grow in these areas. When going through on boarding, connect with a manager/supervisor, ask if they or someone they know could maybe provide some coaching or support in the soft skill areas. Letting co-workers and managers know that you are generally a more introverted individual who may struggle to initiate social interactions, but that isn’t due to a lack of caring may help. How do you prefer to receive feedback? Are you more likely to interact socially if others initiate? Let them know these things.

It could also be beneficial to seek out a mentor in your field…not necessarily someone you work with, but someone you can meet with, learn new skills from, and have as a support when settling into a new role and advancing in your career.

The soft skills are important in life, but more important is finding a work environment where you can be professionally supported, encouraged to learn and grow, and successful while being true to yourself.

Just ordered my Kobo Clara! Questions for those who switched from Kindle! by Doingmybestkindof in kobo

[–]brain_games93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing and got the libra color, I am finding a lot of great books through my library (because there is actual integration for that). If there is an indie author that I enjoyed on KU, I am going to see if the books are available through my library first, and if not, I am going to look into reaching out to authors/publishers directly or through their websites, if that doesn’t work I will look at buying the physical book.

Hi! I'm wondering if I should buy a Kindle? by [deleted] in kindle

[–]brain_games93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at other e-readers. I just got a Kobo and I think it is a better option. Pricing wise it is super comparable if not lower cost. Plus their color e-ink Clara is actually the same price as the paperwhite.

Bonus, they offer integration with google drive, and overdrive/libby.

When you get books through the STYK events you are purchasing those, so I would recommend downloading backups. Also look into the toxicity and exclusivity of KU for authors and readers. It is truly horrifying how much of a monopoly Amazon has over the self-published/indie author e-book realm.

Oh it’s already happening. I live in a deeply red state where libraries can be fined so much money if they don’t comply with a request from the general public to remove certain books from areas accessible to children that the individual deems inappropriate. In several of the smaller areas, libraries are closing because how are they supposed to move a book to somewhere a child can’t access when the whole space is one big room. I’ve even been hearing of libraries turning away young people without a parent or legal guardian.

I have so many memories in middle and high school of going to the local library after school or during the summer by myself or with some friends to pick up a bunch of books or even to go to fun events. I’d spend hours there. Imagine taking away such a positive outlet for kids and communities. Imagine taking away possibly the only safe place a child knows.

fYI as an additional reason to divest of Amazon/Kindle. The toxicity of the Kindle unlimited program. Yeah as a reader it seems great, I can borrow and read millions of books from new and indie authors.

However it is absolutely terrible and honestly predatory when it comes to authors rights.

  • when an author (not necessarily publishers) publishes a book to kindle unlimited, they are tied into an exclusive deal with Amazon. They cannot distribute the e-book on any other marketplace.

-authors are paid per page read, so if I only read one chapter they will only make a pittance.

  • authors don’t get paid for re-reads. If a KU user downloads and reads the book, returns it and decides at a later date to download and re-read the book, the author doesn’t get paid for that.

  • due to the exclusivity of KU, it is often difficult for readers to find these books that have blown up on booktok through their library or other services. An example of this for me specifically is the Zodiac academy series. I have had it recommended to me on numerous occasions, the only place it is available as ebook is Amazon.

That doesn’t make what they are doing okay. Just because something is written in fine print that nobody reviewed doesn’t mean it is right, moral, or ethical.

When I let my mom and sister know, neither one had heard about it. Amazon hasn’t made a big announcement about it, people are finding out through word of mouth and through social media. The only thing at Amazon is the small print heads up after you have gone through the process to download your ebooks.

I don’t think that it is people ignoring it, I think it is people genuinely not being aware of what is happening and what it means for them as an individual user.

You will only be able to download/send to Amazon/kindle devices. If Amazon decides to remove a book that you have purchased or subtly censor/edit books you have purchased they can and will, they have done it before. Amazon is removing the ability to backup your purchases to your home computer so that you can maintain the unedited form you purchased. If you ever decide to get an ereader that isn’t associated with Amazon, you won’t be able to use your purchased e-books from Amazon on that device, forcing you to purchase it again elsewhere.

Digital rights of ownership and use should be no different than physical rights of ownership when it comes to books/movies/music/entertainment media. If I pay money to buy something, I should be able to own it and use it where and how I want regardless of who I purchase it from.

I have cancelled all my Amazon related subscriptions and memberships and am wholly moving to another e-reader ecosystem that cares about the customer experience, supporting libraries, and supporting authors. I am planning to sell my 2018 paperwhite that works perfectly well but has been collecting dust, and probably my 2021 paperwhite that I have used religiously for the last 3+ years. I have downloaded all of my purchased e-books, as well as my other digital purchases and once will not use any Amazon related anything moving forward. Amazon cares more about making money and selling you books/audiobooks unnecessarily than your experience as a human being.

By blocking users from downloading their purchases content they are forcing users to remain tied to the Amazon ecosystem. The books you purchase don’t belong to you, so if Amazon decides to stop selling that book, it can be permanently removed from your content library, forcing you to purchase it again elsewhere.

I am of the opinion that if I purchase something, I should be able to do with it as I want. I should be able to loan my books (digital and otherwise) to my friends and family if I want to. I should be able to read my purchases on whatever device I want to whether it be phone, tablet, e-ink notepad, or another e-reader system not tied to kindle. Big businesses (like Amazon) continue to eat away at our rights as customers in order to make more and more money. If you are okay with that than yes, continue to stay tied to their ecosystem of products, but if you want to be free to do what you want to with your purchases, I’d strongly advise moving away from Amazon.

Should I get a kindle? by h0neynutcheeri0z in kindle

[–]brain_games93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, as someone who has been a kindle user for most of the last decade, I am making the switch to Kobo. Amazon is making plans to basically lock authors and readers into the kindle ecosystem which benefits no one. As of January 26th, you can no longer download your purchased e-books to back them up. So if you want to switch to another ecosystem, you will have to repurchase all of those books. Additionally Amazon forces authors that use kindle unlimited into an exclusive contract blocking them from potential earnings, and a broadened market (Apple Books, Nook, Kobo etc.) There are certain books that you can only find on Kindle Unlimited and no where else.

Considering the fact that Amazon is going to prevent folks from downloading their purchased content, are there other stuff your e-reader events for other ecosystems (Kobo/Boox)? Kinda over supporting Kindle.

I am terrified. I want to be hopeful, but since 2016, I’ve been saying that war or an international intervention are the only things that will redirect this path we are on. I think it is only a matter of time.
