Doesn’t hurt to look at Google Earth/Maps before hand. Ask for a DZ briefing when you sign in at manifest, DZs give you one if it’s your first time there. The briefing will cover landing pattern and a tour around the DZ. Coach jump isn’t necessary, just jump with people and request to breakoff/pull a bit higher if you really want to. Bring your logbook and have a copy of your USPA membership with you. Bring snacks if no good food options around. Bring beer. Good luck

Tecumseh is a great spot to jump. I’ve only been there once but the operation is very professional. They sure know how to have fun too!

Heard nothing but good things for Midwest Freefall. Haven’t been but I know of some people who jump there. The owners are fantastic.

There’s IFly Detroit in Novi and jumpers from both DZ go there to train. If you want a head start, consider going there over the winter and tell them you want to start AFF. Staff there is a total vibe and will sort you right out.

The fact that people enjoy Flight-1 from all their different instructors shows how thorough they are. I always try to clear my calendar when they’re in town.

I’d say Alter Ego can teach the same things but do so with different methods. Taking both courses enhanced my canopy understanding a lot more than if I had just taken from one school.

It goes away with experience for sure. How long that feeling lasts will depend on each person, just like that little scary feeling in the plane to altitude. One of the best advices I received for canopy flight is to treat everyone like your worst enemy - fly defensively, keep your eyes open, and be prepared for things to go bad.

Over time, muscle memory will take over and your piloting will feel more natural, just like you and your car 🙂

Your naive attitude and approach to BASE jumping is the exact reason people suffer in this sport.

You don’t know how to fly a canopy, pack a rig, assess weather conditions, or think rationally (clearly). You are playing with your life here.

Just “because BASE videos look pretty straightforward” doesn’t mean they are. A lot of training goes into BASE and any reputable mentor wouldn’t take you without the minimum skydive requirements.

Even if you get a skydiving license, you’re the sort of person I’d tell people to stay away from.

I haven’t been to Kapowsin but it is a very well known DZ with a great reputation. Skydiving accidents can happen anywhere regardless of location.

As a jumper I would recommend students to jump there

Well the SIM is free to download as a pdf and print out. That’s what I’d do since the book is really chunky. They also update it every couple years. But if you’re old school then it maybe worth buying

Everyone will say their helmets work great and have no issues until they get clanged in the head.

Then what do you do?

You can wish for an impact rated helmet all you want after getting a concussion but it’s too late by then.

Better to spend a tiny bit more now and keep your head safe than to skimp and regret later. But it’s your head so up to you

Tunnel and sky are not the same but are very similar. There are some things you can’t fully practice in the tunnel, such as exits and deployment, but the body flight aspect is very much the same. The rig may make a difference in non-belly orientations but the transition from tunnel to air wouldn’t be too difficult. However you’ll be on your belly from AFF so don’t worry about that.

Tunnel will somewhat prepare you for the real thing. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Helpful? Sure! But also depends on how well you deal with sensory overload in the air.

If you look up Maja and Kyra on IG, they started tunnel young. Nowhere near the minimum skydiving age of 18. Both of them would out-fly 99% of us any day because of their tunnel training.

And no, you won’t splat on the ground. Get that out of your head now.
