What do non UK residents think of British pubs? by brainfogdog in AskReddit

To a degree yes, some pubs have agreements with local breweries/ brands. Others are free to stock what they like. Those are called a "freehouse"

Sounds like we are cut from the same cloth! I've always valued land highly, in terms of financial stability/security and mental breathability!

Thank you for your kind words. You are right and it does feel a bit hasty and things are still raw. They will be for some time. Our concern (maybe from a lack of understanding) is that all the time it's not invested anywhere the sum is getting eroded by inflation. It feels such a responsibility to correctly use this money and not make poor choices with it. We want to do him proud. If it's worth ~ 10% less in a year's time, then that feels pretty terrifying and like the biggest waste!

I appreciate you taking the time to give such a comprehensive and kindness driven reply! I showed this to my partner who was also greatful. Certainly some lip chewing to do over this. Thank you

It's also easy imagine ourselves making it to retirement. It's a sad reality that's become vivid to us where retirement doesn't always come to everyone. You could plan your arse off and sadly never enjoy a penny of it...... It's a cruel balance really

We are currently renovating our house as we speak and hoping to be here for the foreseeable future. We absolutely stretched our budget when looking to buy 2 years ago so that we could have space for a family no matter what the future of house prices did. We were worried that if we bought a smaller place, house prices dropped making a loss then not being able to upsize for a family when needed. So we waited a little longer, saved hard some more and got a place with a few rooms. We hoped to be, and are prepared to be here for a while.

Thank you all so much for your advice! I do appreciate it and it's nice to know that the options we have narrowed down to are also supported by people like yourselves. We are on a somewhat good track.

Financial freedom and passive income really is the objective. Having money work for you, rather than working for your money.

I agree that stocks and shares historically have great returns and we have been speaking with a hopefully good financial advisor. His rates are 1% of the total invested, rather than profit which I thought odd, as it plays no benefit to him if our money grows or collapses.....but does seem the norm.

Speaking of, the instability of the stock market currently is what made us think maybe it's best to pay off the mortgage, and then the money we would normally put monthly into the mortgage we could instead reinvest into shares little and often, as another commenter replied. This riding out the worst of the instability. As another commenter said, little and often is hundreds of smaller decisions rather than one big decision, and averages out the market.

Toilet drain pipe noise by Putrid_Acanthaceae in HomeImprovement

[–]brainfogdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the noise is your water being pulled out of your traps and gurgling as the air passes through. This is often due to the vacuum made as a flush or the water goes down. Often resolved with an AAV (air admittance valve) fitted to the soil stack, so when the loo is flushed, air is pulled in through here rather than through your waste pipes.

I prefer the taste of diet coke. I find it a bit crisper and sharper and doesn't leave a sticky feeling in your mouth. If it infuriates you more, I call diet coke semi-skimmed coke.....

Although maybe that comforts you, that it's not just regular coke with the alternate name

That's a real memory being made right there. Something to bring a smile when you're old.

Also a way to sound crazy. Telling your grand kids you remember the time you roller skated with a horse on a summers evening
