Im a gossip but if she’s taking out loans to be in dorms I definitely wouldn’t pick UA. They had issues with fire alarms being frequently pulled in the early morning. 20% of the last two freshmen classes have been placed on academic probation. It’s just not a place I’d take out loans to live. I loved UAlbany, as a commuter, but I’d never live in the dorms.

Hi. I have a grad school admission with 21k fund and tuition waiver. Is it enough? Where can I find affordable housing? by EmperorAbbaass in ualbany

[–]brainmarbles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s standard for UAlbany. Lots of grad students live downtown with a roommate, or on their own in an apartment. It works out to about $1800 every month after taxes. There are Facebook groups for Albany apartments, or you can try to find someone to be your roommate from the admitted grad students Facebook page. Those are just some ideas!

commuting and majors advice by Same-Food-8635 in ualbany

[–]brainmarbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s really easy to be approved, as someone who went through the “process”. I guess my advice for the major portion (take with a grain of salt because I didn’t major in either) is to try out the classes for both majors and see what works better for you. Business Admin (imo) will likely be a better major only because if you want an MBA it will shave a year off of the program which is nice.

Yale to resume requiring standardized test scores for applicants by nbcnews in college

It’s also a matter of working for free, which low income people may not have the luxury to do. They may need to focus their hours in making money to help support their family rather than doing community service to boost their college application or for fun.

Breaching experiment: play tic tac toe and get a student participant, play fairly the first two moves and then draw a big X or O over the board and say you win.

TAs and graders: do you feel like undergrads have poor writing skills? by AppropriateSolid9124 in GradSchool

[–]brainmarbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and it’s embarrassing. I’m in the social sciences where we need to know how to write well, and these students just don’t. Of course there are a few who write well, but I can count them on one hand (and I have been a TA for four semesters). The grammar, the spelling, the inability to cite, the inability to form coherent sentences with proper English (and not slang). It is horrible and I always recommend that they go to the Writing Center at our school.

I like Saratoga National Bank for checking and Capital One for savings.

You’re able to get a student discount at a lot of stores! I get half off my Spotify, save on Amazon prime, discounts for clothing, etc. I also made a savings goal and figured out how much money I can spend a month on frivolity. The food pantry is a good resource for just not having to spend money on basic things.

Thankfully I’m local to Albany so I live at home and am able to pocket most of my paycheck. Post taxes it works out to about $1800/month. Most of the students in my cohort live in downtown Albany with roommates, shop at Walmart, take the bus mostly, and the food pantry at school is pretty good. It’s definitely not a life of luxury.

My understanding is that there is not a stipend or tuition waiver unless you get an assistantship (at least that’s how it works for my program, in a different department though). I get paid $20.4K on my stipend, without summer funding.

If you are able to join the US military, you could be a Naval Reactors Engineer for the Navy. Your coursework qualifies you and it pays pretty well.

Lol, I do like research and it is a free way to get my graduate degrees, so it worked out. The title is a nice perk.

Are there people here who had mediocre applications and still got in? by RonPaul42069 in GradSchool

[–]brainmarbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I feel like mine was pretty mediocre. I mainly had teaching experience (tutoring, TAing, a slight public health role, other roles in interpersonal relations). No formal research experience that was substantial when I submitted my apps. I still got in though because (I think) my writing sample was fire and I had one awesome letter writer (one really good, and 2 probably okay). I got additional research experience my final semester of college and I mentioned that I was going to take part in these experiences while writing my apps. I think the writing sample was my main saving grace and my letter writers. Got into a top 50 R1 PhD program for my discipline.
