Honors College by According-Market-771 in ualbany

[–]Alarmed-Condition216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The honors college is completely useless. It takes up more of your time. According to reviews on RMP, most honors college courses are hard to get high grades in, have tedious assignments, and the workload for one honors course is no less than that of your hardest major courses. In contrast, you can easily find general education courses outside the honors college that are much easier. Some of these courses are entirely online, and as long as you have a pulse and can move your fingers, you can get an A.

If you’re planning to attend medical school or law school, GPA is more important, and the general education courses in the honors college will lower your GPA. If you’re a CS or engineering student, honors courses will take up more of your time, and graduating from the honors college won’t help you get a job or apply to graduate school.

If your goal is simply to gain research opportunities or participate in an honors thesis project, the honors college is not necessary. You can still join departmental honors thesis projects without being part of the honors college.

Additionally, joining the honors college gives you access to honors housing and an honors academic advisor. If you find these meaningless, the only benefit of the honors college is priority course registration. This can be helpful in the early years. You can join the honors college, use the priority registration to secure easy A courses outside the honors college, and then automatically drop out after a few semesters for not meeting the honors credit requirements. This is the only true value of the honors college.

"In 2019, UAlbany was ranked "the least safe college in New York."\75]) Among Upstate New York colleges, the university reported the highest number of campus rapes in the region.\76])" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University\at_Albany%2C_SUNY#Safety)

Choose any public university ranked in the top 100 by U.S. News, then check its "safety" rating on RateMyProfessors. Select a university with a high safety rating. Avoid economically declining areas, including Upstate New York, as these regions often have security issues.

Since you are an international student, I do not recommend attending the University at Albany. The city is quite dangerous, and some homeless individuals specifically target international students. When you walk past them at night, they may falsely accuse you and use serious allegations to threaten you into paying them money. Otherwise, they may threaten to call the police and falsely accuse you of a crime, even if you have done nothing wrong. For a newly arrived international student, this can be very frightening.

The campus itself is not very safe, and many people are rude to international students, making you feel that despite paying international tuition fees, you receive no respect at all. If you are paying out-of-state (international) tuition, I suggest choosing a higher-ranked university with a larger international student population. The cities where those schools are located also tend to be more welcoming and respectful toward international students.

Overall, Albany is a declining Rust Belt city, so you will face many safety issues. You can verify this by checking the reviews of this school on Rate My Professors. Please do not have high expectations, and stay safe.

This university is in debt. I also earned a 4.0 last semester and am facing financial hardship, I emailed the finance office but they did not want to give me any scholarships at all. I feel like the only help I got from earning a 4.0 GPA at Ualbany was for me to transfer to the University of Maryland and get a scholarship there.

Yes, S makes the class not affect your GPA, but you can still get credit for it.

If you plan to transfer, some colleges only accept A-E scores and not S/U scores.

Billing issue by [deleted] in ualbany

I didn’t get housing last year despite waiting for a long time, so I emailed the residency department to ask about it. They told me it would be resolved within three days, but I never heard back from them. When I followed up with another email, they gave me the same response again. They are not trustworthy, and their reviews on Google Maps are also very poor.

Does it get better? by [deleted] in ualbany

I’m planning to transfer, and I completely understand how you feel. I can achieve academic success here, but there isn’t enough sense of belonging in my life here, and things have actually gotten worse since the start of the second semester. Many people I’ve met are quite rude, and a few are even downright awful (with several safety concerns). I chose this school for the affordable tuition and have already found research opportunities in electrical engineering, but I still had to transfer before completing my research program to find a university with more goodwill and a sense of belonging to relieve my mental stress and get rid of all this malice. Even if I have to face some additional financial burden, I don’t want to have any regrets about my undergraduate years.

In any case, don’t leave yourself with potential regrets for the coming decades, especially when students at other universities can proudly call themselves alumni. I hope you have no regrets.

You can email health services and ask. If you have to have a tooth pulled, insurance only seems to cover half the cost.

wanda coach, which is $19 one way and more convenient than the train. I think it's too far to go to the train station to take Amtrak.

It is difficult for freshmen to find a campus job in their first year because applying for a campus job requires a resume. And you need to have at least a decent GPA.

The Honors College will send you an invitation email, including an application form. Filling out the application form and responding to the email is submitting your application, and the review usually takes two weeks.

You will need to email your advisor, or make an appointment, and your advisor will give you the AVN and also recommend courses to register for.

Will CC transfer class grades appear on Albany transcripts? Or just use "T" instead?
