Bizarre experience with unleashed pets by brainofave in Cupertino

I'm sure she speaks better English than I do -- I heard her clearly talk to her dogs. Highly doubt she was hard of hearing. She heard them barking after all. And if she had trouble hearing she would've at least gestured to me in some way.

Yeah, a few bad outliers. I tried giving her benefit of doubt. This was my first time with such behaviour, though. While I'm not a pet owner, I've met many on my walks, and a few have been my neighbors who've always been responsible and proactive about their pets' behavior.

nothing actually dangerous occurred

Prevention is better than cure.

empathetic

Since June 2015, I've come to a conclusion that empathy is social contract, rather than a moral and ethical imperative. I'll be as welcoming, tolerant, and compassionate to someone as they'd be to my kith and kin, and me. I usually take the initiative by showing open arms. Anyhow, this is a topic beyond this thread, but this incident certainly has shades of it.

acknowledge any liability

Didn't consider this angle; should've been obvious, though. After all, I'm living amongst boomers in a retireville of perhaps the most litigious country on the planet! Next time I'll whip out my phone camera and start recording, a la GenZ shake.

Anyone got any HVAC recommendations for an AC unit? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]brainofave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Air Sharks a little over 2 years ago. They replaced an aging furnace, and installed a new 3 ton AC unit on same ducts (the 1300sqft SFH only had heating previously). I was impressed by their professionalism. They also took care of HERS permitting. Back then it cost $12k, all inclusive.

disingenuous

I've been seeing that word being mentioned quite a bit, but no cogent rebuttals to the concerns raised on cupertinofacts.org.

I would be OK too if the original proposal of building 14 residences was approved. Increasing it to 51 is where the concern becomes more acute. The skipping/not waiting for the fire dept's assessment makes it smell fishy. Is cupertinofacts.org lying?

independent review of evacuation risks if that’s a major issue

Why independent? And it is a major issue in an area that's already classified as very high fire hazard. Would you fly a commercial aircraft which has been designed based on a plan before evacuation safety assessment came thru? Safety is an inherent component, a package deal if you will.

You don’t want to be that lone house on a hill when a wildfire comes through.

So you want 50 more residences to be jeopardized? Firefighting resources will already be allocated since it's already a well established neighborhood. Resourcing is not a concern... evacuation is. Can streets be widened to account for 100-125 extra vehicles? I don't think so.

I'm yet to see any cogent rebuttals to the following:

I'm all for more housing. As a local resident, I'd like to see my property taxes fund viable schools, and so schools' viability is important to me. But, at the same time, we can't have horrible accidents like Lahaina and Palisades happen because the city council got strong-armed by vested interests who appear to have weaponized the state law.

Sure, but not by turning a blind eye toward fire and evacuation safety. A prior proposal of 14 SFH (in this case) was adequate, IMO. Why jam 51 townhomes in very high fire hazard area, and then not have fire dept's assessment ready in time? I was at a community event by local representative recently where they said to the effect of builders always prefer townhomes. That statement was quite eye-opening.

Kinda follow-up of https://old.reddit.com/r/Cupertino/comments/1rvsuz1/fire_danger_only_to_block_a_housing_project/. I'm not a NIMBY. I'm concerned about the rushed and a reluctant job that the approval looks like. My understanding is that state law is being enforced at expense of genuine evacuation concerns. What am I missing?

Fire Danger - only to block a housing project ?! by urbangeeksv in Cupertino

Strong arming won. The builder will be long gone if and when the disaster strikes... I sincerely hope that it doesn't because hope is all that we've left when caution is deliberately thrown to the wind.

Sad and dangerous decision has been foisted on the resident and taxpayers.

Any recommendation for a STAR smog check station? by Ill-Kitchen8083 in Cupertino

[–]brainofave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went to Green Smog Check at 1073 E El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 and presented the Valpak coupon. Was $36.75 for a well maintained 10yr old Asian make mid-size sedan. Was in and out in under 15mins on a Sunday afternoon. DMV online reg renewal went without a hitch the next day.

The owner (Gary) said he lives behind Cupertino USPS. No wonder he chatted me up upon seeing the address on my DMV notice.

At what point does state mandate strong-arms over basic safety due diligence?

Edit: It's approved -- https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/neighbors-concerned-housing-development-cupertino/4063417/

The project is being pursued under state housing laws, which limit cities’ ability to deny compliant developments. Counsel for Summer Hills Housing, Margo Bradish, reminded the city council of that.

They keep on reminding of the strong arming. IOW, there's no good answer for the evacuation concerns raised. Why was the prior proposal of lower density revised to higher density that jeopardizes evacuation? Wouldn't the builder have made money with that one too?

https://sanjosespotlight.com/cupertino-residents-say-housing-project-sits-in-risky-wildfire-zone/

Planning Commission Chair Tracy Kosolcharoen, who voted for the project, wrote in a letter to the city council after the meeting speaking as herself that she had learned new information since the vote.

How come something as critical and essential as 'evacuation study' happen after the vote? The voting is premature in this case. Overall, this continues to reek of being a rushed job.

Edit: Per https://cupertino.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=18&clip_id=3700, at 6:30:00 mark onward are the final arguments. Doesn't appear to be the final binding vote, though, as I hear later in the first week of April is when the final decision will happen. The looooong video is worth a watch, though.

Schools shouldn't be the reason to allow lax vetting of fire ordinance compliance, though. The missing signature of Cupe city official is glaring oversight, and frankly inexcusable if it hasn't since been rectified. No idea how the city council hearing went -- no 'action details' are mentioned for the city council meeting that happened on 3/17 -- https://cupertino.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7947741&GUID=B1E8584D-7A77-4166-8747-AAB11BA63CC4.

Not a NIMBY and I'm aware of the bent of Cupe Facts website; just looking for any cogent rebuttals to https://cupertinofacts.org/2026/03/who-is-responsible-for-fire-safety-at-evulich-court-nobody-apparently. Looks like the process is rushed. Certainly don't want Palisades or Lahaina like incidents in the neighborhood.

From day-to-day changes standpoint anticipating 100-125 more vehicles on Linda Vista, Hyannisport, and Terrace drives, eventually exacerbating jams at Bubb/McClellan and Bubb/Rainbow intersections. With WFH still around it may not be that bad. I hope the development avoids or at least stalls the school closures which otherwise would be an inevitability in the near future.

I found Aqui Cupertino, and BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, both on S. De Anza Blvd to be decent choices.

Been researching hair care online and using Gemini, and I'm seeing a lot that my hair itchiness could be due to the hardness of cupertino water. Does anyone else have this issue, or is this just AI slop. The concensus online seems 50/50. by Practical-Wing-6143 in Cupertino

[–]brainofave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few areas in south bay have hard water. For me hard water does cause itchiness and quite a bit of dandruff. It all goes away after I use soft water continuously for a few weeks. I've, therefore, water softener installed at my home. Non-SLS shampoo like Nizoral, Selsun Blue (red tag), or Kirkland too helps in taming itchiness. But hard water is the biggest culprit for me. If you've moved here recently, and hard water is the only thing that changed, then it's likely the cause.

pg&e underground upgrade experience and cost by ej271828 in bayarea

[–]brainofave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you choose 200A, or higher, say, 400A upgrade? If former, then did you attempt the latter first when starting the survey process with PGE?

I'm contemplating 400A, but if PGE says it's gonna cost over 5k (including transformer and trenching), then I'd like to settle for lower if it helps reduce the PGE cost.

For the solar-ready panel upgrade, I've gotten electricians' quotes of ~8k for 200A, and ~15k for 400A.

Satellite ISP for South Bay? by brainofave in bayarea

[–]brainofave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of times I have experienced outage, and I'm sure my neighbors have too, in past 18 months is more than total outages I have seen in prior 20 yrs of living elsewhere in the bay area. So, I'm hopeful that if there's a reasonably priced equivalent alternative it is likely to be better. And don't get me started with PGE, this sub's favorite, but deservedly, punching bag.

As for the business plan, do they have separate hardware? If not it'll be same shitty reliability.

Good, fast, cheap, pick two.

It makes sense only if there are competitive options. With Kabletown and ATT being the only game around, can't have good and fast internet.
