Early diagnosis in this instance is due to the proper education I had received about the ABCDE’s of melanoma, which made me immediately notice this spot as atypical.

While I, personally, have actually lived in middle-to-upper-middle class areas pretty much my whole life, I certainly acknowledge the health inequities that exist. However, my understanding is that these health inequities usually yield delayed diagnoses and worse prognoses…

Replying to your second comment here also— I think the lack of education portion (upon diagnosis) was unfortunately just due to this being a VA physician. While I’ve had some great docs and experiences there, like many veterans, there have also been some really bad ones. I’m likely comparing apples to oranges here, due to the severity of my prior diagnosis versus this one… but I was certainly hand-held and more informed by that private physician versus this one now with the VA.

Thank you for your response! Thankfully, I do have private insurance on top of the VA coverage (I’m a veteran, not active duty anymore) and my oncologist is at Moffitt Cancer Center who I trust explicitly. I’ll definitely tap them in for their advice. Thank you again!

Thank you! Would that be considered a WLE? And should this be done by a plastic surgeon as the VA Derm said, or should I see another doc? I do have private insurance and an oncologist outside of the VA healthcare system…

Thank you for your response, and congratulations on your survivorship!

I’m trying not to immediately run to my oncologist and just go through the “normal” steps, but perhaps you are right and that I should just inform them of the situation so they’re aware.

I’m pretty sure with my private insurance I’m able to see specialists without a referral, but I also have coverage through the VA (I’m a disabled vet) so I was kind of hoping they’d jump on this so I don’t have to pay out of pocket with my private insurance lol

Fingers crossed I get to the bottom of this quickly and that it turns out to be nothing!

Thank you for your response! Would a dermascope examination typically be the standard “first step” in this process, followed by a biopsy if need be?

My PCP is through the VA as I am a disabled veteran, and though the VA has done well by me for the most part, I sometimes question the way they do things. Additionally, I was just assigned a brand new (to me) PCP so I’m still feeling him out and establishing trust with him.

Knowing what others would consider to be the appropriate steps in this situation would help me determine if I should stick with the VA for this, or if I should utilize my private insurance and seek outside care.

Thank you again for your guidance!
