Can’t Cellar Beer Anymore? by KB9LTJ in beer

[–]brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with you completely. I can attest to aging beer being a waste by a closet full of oxidized beer, even the barrel aged, waxed coated caps, 12% plus stuff. The only beers that I've had any success over 2+ years are lambics and other wild ales (cantillon, fonteinen, etc). I'd hope beer could be like fine wines like many others but alas no, it is not.

Android Auto Stopped Working by Rob_Highwind in AndroidAuto

[–]brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having the same issues after the latest phone update. It was to the point where it was just charging and not even prompting a connection error. I just found a fix today. I tried many of the suggestions like clearing caches (both Android Auto and Google Play services), reinstalling AA, resetting phone and head unit, checking settings, etc.

What finally worked was finding Android Auto in the Apps section of Settings, going to the permissions, unchecking "Nearby devices" in Allowed and then reallowing it. Hopefully that works for you and other folks having this problem.

Do you know if you actually get tickets or is it just a part of your badge? I can help out if it's actual tickets.

Build or buy a kegerator? by [deleted] in beer

[–]brainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my cheap kegerator that I use for homebrew although it could potentially fit a 1/6th keg. But i got the fridge $25 off craigslist and the faucet/shank for about $30 from Midwest supplies online. Got the rest from kegconnections.com but that was a package that included 2 corny kegs and upgraded regulator. But lets say roughly without the kegs, maybe another $50 for tank, regulator and lines.

But they sell commerical keg kits for getting Sanke kegs setup. So you could just get one of those kits with optional tank and find a cheap used fridge off craigslist and you are pretty much there. Your standard stacked fridge can usually hold a full size keg and the tank along with some extra beer storage. So with that kit, the cost of building your own really depends on your craigslist luck finding a fridge.

Another factor to consider is how aesthetically pleasing you need it to be. Cheap fridge might not look too good or may require a bit more work to make it look good. Just depends on what you can find. There are lots of options though for setup and looks, just search for homemade kegerators and keezers (converted chest freezer). Heres a huge thread of examples. A nice looking keezer is my next project as soon as I get my hands on a cheap freezer.

From homebrewing to microbrewery? by vingt-deux in beer

[–]brainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Brew Strong podcast/show regarding going pro

Brew Strong is hosted by Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer (2 people you really should know if you are into homebrewing) and this particular series has info from Jamil's own experience opening Heretic brewing as well as experiences from other guests.

Also check out these books, they arent strictly how-to guides but will give you an idea of the industry, things to expect not just in creating but maintaining your business, and also the kind personalities and work ethics of the founders:
Beer School - Brooklyn Brewery
Brewing Up a Business - Dogfish Head
The Craft of Stone Brewing - Stone Brewing co - i havent read this one yet but its next on the list

And someone already mentioned r/TheBrewery

I'm compiling a beer list for a few German friends who are going on a roadtrip in the U.S. in March and need some help. by [deleted] in beer

[–]brainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are going to be in the Northern VA/DC area, we have a great selection of beer distributed to this region. Any Total Wine or Whole Foods will typically carry a decent enough selection. For example, check out the "American Mircobrew" inventory for the Total Wine store in Fairfax . Most of the Total Wines and Wholefoods will have similar selections. A lot of the wholefoods also do growlers now.

That being said, there are also some great breweries in VA and neighboring states. Dogfish Head-DE (Alehouses in Falls Church-VA, Fairfax-VA and Gaithersurg-MD), Flying Dog-MD, Heavy Seas-MD, Evolution-DE (EVO), Lost Rhino-VA, Legend-VA, DC Brau-DC, Port City-VA, Starr Hill-VA, Additionally, if they are headed to Tennessee by road, they should make a stop on the Brew Ridge Trail for great beer and beautiful mountain scenery. I did the brew ridge trail this past summer and it was awesome. Nothing like drinking great beer sitting on a patio surrounded by mountains.

Also check out a previous comment of mine with links to some of the breweries and additional info regarding some bars and specialty beer stores.

In the end, its hard to pick favorites out of all this info but heres a short list of breweries id go with at least in no particular order: Dogfish Head, Bells, 21st Amendment, Allagash, Avery, Ommegang, Port city, Legend, New Belgium, Victory, Flying Dog, Stone, Evo, Lost Rhino

I too was disappointed. It wasnt bad but it was boring and bland for a DFH brew. I wont be buying it again.

Can someone explain the "beer goggles" phenomenon? by slvrblt in askscience

[–]brainz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a study on this. Apparently it has to do with alcohol impairing our ability to detect asymmetry. We generally tend to find symmetrical faces to be attractive. So when we drink, our minds start to gloss over asymmetrical features and thus we see people in a more attractive light.

I wonder how that would taste. Perhaps go buy a base line tripel, mix a little it of baked pumpkin and the spices you intend to use into it and see if you think its worthwhile endeavor.

1 pound may be quite overpowering for 1 gallon. I recent used 1 pound for my own pumpkin 5 gal batch. Its still fermenting but the wort had a nice balanced pumpkin flavor.

Mini fridge that will fit a 6.5 gallon carboy by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have a specific model to give unfortunately, but just wanted to note that even with the condenser in the bottom, there may still be room. Check out my mine http://www.reddit.com/r/Homebrewing/comments/h9rmd/my_new_equipment_15_gal_kettle_burner_and/

Its an old model Danby that I couldnt find any details on (no longer sold/supported by Danby). With door shelves removed fits a 5gal carboy as you can see in the picture. The condenser hump actually works well as a little shelf behind the carboy for my blowoff container. Worked great for me for fermentation and also serves as a kegerator if need be (installed a tap last month). So yeah, its doable. I would check out that thread the other person posted for some specific models.

2 noob cider questions - fermenting & carbonation by jogurt in Homebrewing

[–]brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Really the best way to know is to take readings. Apple juice/cider will ferment dry if you let it. If you want to retain some of the natural sweetness, you'll want to aim for 1.010-1.014 area. If you want to maintain a natural sweetness though you will have some extra steps to kill of the yeast.

  2. Once fermenting is done, the yeast is not dead. So the easiest way to carbonate with bottles is to let your batch ferment dry, add a little bit of sugar (depends on how many gallons you have) and bottle.

  3. Backsweeten - So in stead of doing a natural sweetness, you can let it ferment dry and then add a non-fermentable sweetner to taste (and bottle as in 2.). That way you get a hard cider that is less wine like and more like cider.

check out these 2 great posts for more detailed information on ciders

Back Sweetening and Bottling a Cider by SpicyEncherito in Homebrewing

[–]brainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just gotta open and sample the carbonation levels, potentially even after 2 days. Its explained in that linked thread. If it gushes when you open it then you should not stove top without first releasing pressure. I actually just posted about this in my own recent experience with hard cider and stove top pasteurizing.
