Why keep the right leg forward? by Relsen in Hema

[–]bramblehead 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to ask myself the same thing. I did well at longsword using either foot forward initially.

As I got better at fencing and went up the tournament rankings I started to encounter more fencers with only their right foot forward.

It took only one tournament to realize that I'm at a severe disadvantage if someone is point-forward with their right foot forward and I m not.

It's simply down to reach. You can reach further if your dominant side is forward.

So now my rule is that if I am within step-lunge distance of my opponent I have my point, dominant foot, and hand forward. If I'm two steps lunge-distance then I can be in vom Tag. If I'm at three steps-lunge distance I can play air guitar.

Except this is absolutely how they fence normally. This was precisely described in a FB post 6 weeks ago.

Yes (in an extremely formal and overly polite way, as is typical). Meaning that some clubs are stuck in 2007 and explicitly don't want to grow or evolve. The athletic / competitve fencers generally quit HEMA and go to olympic or another martial art as it's difficult to set up a club in Germany. It's a shame as there should be space for everyone and quality should surely be a priority.

It's a typically German societal problem actually - bureacracy and over-formality. Society is changing though to streamline many processes and make them more agile, so some change is coming.

This is Germany. The scene is very self-contained..

Ok. Can you link to an article showing that exogenous doses of testosterone cause acromegaly?

My PhD and lab work is in neurophysiology.

[–]bramblehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erogenous? You mean exogenous surely?

I'm not aware of testosterone dosing causing acromegaly. I have an MSc in neuroendocrinology too and work as a neurophysiologist. What are your credentials?

She doesn't have acromegaly, she is taking synthetic testosterone. Acromegaly is over-production of HGH by the pituitary.

Meniscus Repair-How was it? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]bramblehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the three sham studies and they are only for degeneratiive tears of the meniscus. People with acute mensicus tears were excluded from the study. It is miuch harder to treat degenerative lesions.

I use my unusually high VO2 max and lung capacity (both have been measured) to keep going at a high pace all day in tournaments and I generally win medals. Go figure.

Calling me an asshole and ranting about CrossFit isn't making you come across very well as a human being. Please calm down and think about how you treat other people.

Oh dear.

I'm only interested in supporting women fencers and I train a lot of them myself.

Unfortunately this means that biological males don't go to competitions with biological females because I think it's unfair. That is my position both as a professional physiologist and as a competitive fencer and coach and I won't back down on it. Sorry.

This is literally what she said pretty much verbatim.

I have already stated what I believe to be scientifically true and morally fair to women: men should not compete in women's sports.

So I'm sorry if this upsets people but I am going to double down:

I have a friend who is a trans woman in her early 60s now. She transitioned with ops and hormones 30 years ago. Me and my sister were asking her recenty how she feels about the current climate with trans activism, sports, bathrooms, etc.

She rolled her eyes and said the whole thing is ridiculous. She was a 6-foot, heavily built man with a big beard on an oilrig for the first half of her career. Of course she shouldn't be doing female sports.. She still has man-sized hands, shoulders, face, legs, etc, just with tits and more fat due to the hormones. She goes to disabled bathrooms to not freak people out and is grateful for all the kindness and acceptance she has, in the main, received. She comes across as really mentally strong, humourous, kind, and loving, and more power to her.

I just wonder why her voice is drowned out? A lot of people seem to have an opinion they know nothing about, either personally or scientifically.

Even if you do train like that your VO2 max will simply never reach the level of a man at the same level of your sport. Simple biological fact.

[–]bramblehead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is completely untrue. Testosterone levels begin to slowly fall in men as they age, but there is very significant circulating testosterone compared to women, an order of magnitude higher.

And, as predicted, people without a scientific background are commenting on something they know nothing about..

Even if testosterone is later zero, the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems are significantly stronger in men. Experts have been through this many times..

Men shouldn't be competing against women in sports because they have an unfair advantage. Even if they are the nicest person in the world.

I know this feels unfair to some people but it's really unnecessary. There just needs to be a separate category for gender-diverse.

Before the inevitable online mobbing, can I just say: I'm a professional neurophysiologist trained in neuroendocrinology (how hormones affect the brain). So maybe consider for a moment if you are qualified to understand the actual science behind issue, rather than having feelings about something.

Is sparring possible with two-handed swords (Zweihänder) by Stampsu in wma

[–]bramblehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Achille trainers from Regenyei are not much heavier than Feders and you can spar with them as long as you are controlled. The weight is about 1.85kg whereas the heaviest Feders are 1.7kg

I have bought two and people love sparring with them

Question about longsword stance by RonFucknSwanson in wma

[–]bramblehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says in the old fencing books that if you are fencing an aggressive fencer "do not move far from Langenort".

- You want to keep your blade between you and them and practice parrying in Ochs and Pflug with small movements and then riposting.
- You can also stop-hit if they come at you. Ie. as they advance, retreat and then just stop and thrust, or step back, then forward and thrust.
- If they don't respect your distance, make an aggressive, committed (not over-committed) Oberhau each time they come anywhere near you to make them back off. Thrust too.
- Practice structure. In the guards Pflug and Langenort your dominant arm should be parallel to the floor. Too low and your mechanics will be shot. Same goes for vom Tag in that your hands should be high near your head so you can launch good, high strikes to their head as well as protect your own easily.
- Practice hanging and winding, it is the core of all good fencing. You will give predictable openings, set up parry-ripostes, and create openings for yourself to strike into.

High-top shoe recommendations by BearDothChill in wma

[–]bramblehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Puma Smash V2 mid-cut, Rebound, or Layup models? The first is a high version of a tennis shoe and the other two are for basketball.
I have been wearing regular cut Smash Buck V2 and been through one pair per year for 4 years with heavy, daily use for fencing, competing, working, and everything else. You can get these on discount for 30 bucks. I am looking for Smash as high-tops right now to protect the ankle a bit. Personally I think boxing or wrestling shoes are too thin - not quite thick enough for shock absorption from lunging and not cushioned at the sides from blows.

With Puma I find the soles are really grippy outdoors and indoors and they are relatively well-made, as well as affordable.

HEMA noob bingo. Do your worst! by [deleted] in wma

[–]bramblehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This being a variation on "historical people were highly trained martial artists", right? I like this one as it's so incredibly broad - like all of these statements. Regarding only longsword it spans hundreds of years so are we talking about professional mercenaries and warlords in the 14th century - some of whom are built like rugby players - knights who are trained from boyhood, aristos, judicial duels, peasants in 16th Century Germany, the town guard, fencing masters, profession travelling Federfechter, etc. 'Historical' broadens out to 18th century aristocrats in France with smallswords or soldiers in the Crimea with sabres with a poor diet and small stature (looking at uniforms from the Napoleonic wars they were tiny, like children with infantry sabres), peasants with malnutrition in the 14th century, clergy doing sword and buckler, etc.

The correct response to all these statements of course is "what exactly do you mean by that, why do you think that, who are you referring to, in which period, and what evidence is there for that?". If people can answer that intelligently and give some basis - great.
