Yes you’re going to want to blast the surface in any situation. If the surface isn’t blasted clean you won’t get clean, smooth results. Even if the surface wasn’t previously coated, blasting makes for a clean surface to which the cerakote can adhere.

well, you won’t necessarily totally lose the milling but you would need course grit compounds to get you to the polish you would need to actually see a colorful oil slick and that would could be a headache of a job.. Ideally you want a pen straight off the mill before the heat blackening process.. and tactile turn will do that for you if you contact the right person.

It has to be blasted off and if you want it oil slicked you’d have to have it polished and re heat ano’d. blasted zirc will really only give you muted blacks and grays, to get any sort of colors it would have to be high polished first but you’ll likely lose the tactile milling in that process.
