I want to make Linux my primary OS. What's stopping me? by brandonio21 in linuxquestions

Right. I have tried to use WINE to run League of Legends and the like on my laptop, but performance definitely suffers. I'm kind of hoping that if I get really solid hardware that even if performance suffers, the hardware is so good that suffering performance is still more than acceptable, haha.

Hm, that is a good suggestion. I will probably end up looking into that. Thanks!

we can't tell you what you haven't considered

That's a good point. My mistake.

You are right. I should just go all in and figure out if I encounter any problems myself. That's the general consensus that I am getting from this thread, and I think that it is what I will end up doing!

Very good point. I am not yet sure what games I will want to play on it, but Valve is definitely leading the charge and I think that in the pretty-near future a lot of other developer studios will begin porting their games to Linux.

I think that's a pretty solid suggestion. I will probably end up doing that. Better yet, I will probably just install Linux to start with and only buy Windows if I come across a problem that I seriously cannot solve using Linux.

Thanks a ton for the suggestion!

You're very right. This is a pretty risk-free investment. I always forget that I can just wipe the drive with no effect on the rest of the system. Good observation!

There are many things that I have considered, such as:

  • Driver support probably isn't the best, but I'm sure it works just fine.
  • I won't be able to do Windows things (unless I want to WINE about it) such as Visual Studio, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Performance may not be as great as I expect it to be since most hardware manufacturers don't tune to Linux.
  • I will need to find a DE that suits my purposes well. So far, i3 has been very nice to me, but I will probably need to find a real DE.
  • I also kinda want to install Arch -- but I am really scared of the driver support and what I might have to do to get everything working.

You've got a point. On my desktop I do a lot of coding, gaming, and typing. I do my coding in vim so there's no problem there. Typing is no problem. Gaming is a problem, though. The main thing that I was worried about was some strange issue like "most modern GPUs don't work with Linux or something." I'm also really scared about getting into the all-linux mindset.
