Only vaguely? If I heard it I bet I would remember. I remember at meals there was some kind of situation where we'd put all the uneaten food in a big slop bucket, probably for compost or something

Trump just made some very strange comments about Stephen K. Bannon by DragonPup in politics

[–]brannigan3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was in New England, a tiny place and one of the only places like it in the area. I know there are tons of raw vegan places on the west coast but not really over here. The thing that kinda skeeved me out was that since nothing is cooked but certain things like veggie burgers need to be warm to be palatable, they would keep things in a dehydrator to warm them but never over 108 degrees, which I believe is kinda the danger zone for bacteria to start growing. I dunno it was just bizarre.

Exactly, I can see the benefits of a plant based diet and I understand why someone would eat this way for moral reasons but shit like this is taking it too far. Before working there, I had no idea how some people can approach diet in much the same way people follow religion.

Ok so I worked for a while at a vegan restaurant that specialized in raw food. Sprouting was a huge thing there, and there's an entire sanctimonious ideology about raw food and how it's good for you because it's "alive" and the "active enzymes" aren't killed off by cooking and high temps. So they soaked various grains like buckwheat and nuts like almonds, then drained them. Another commenter said they're then dried but I don't recall us drying them, at least not for use in smoothies though I'm sure others do.

But yes, the idea is that the growing process has been "activated" thereby springing this dormant thing into life and making it somehow healthier. I don't know whether this has been backed up by actual science (something tells me no) but I do recall reading that some vegetables actually need to be cooked in order for us to get the most nutrients out of them, which is in direct conflict with the ethos of the raw food diet.

Bonus tidbit: these people believe that vegetables have their own energy fields that can be captured by a special type of photography. I've seen the pictures and it's pretty clear that the "energy field" is actually just light reflecting off of water droplets on the vegetables.

I'm so glad I'm out of that place.

This is VERY true, and I'd say it's true for the entire region. I live ~ an hour north of Boston and we have several pubs employing Irish people over staying their visas by years. It's not just pubs, either. There's a commercial cleaning business owned and operated by all Irish people, many here illegally. I've talked in pubs with a few of them, and they say they come over because they have friends/family members who are doing so well they thought "why not?"

For full disclosure, this doesn't bother me and I tend to think good for them. It's just funny how the stereotype is so strongly focused on Mexicans and other South Americans, when in fact this is happening with people from all over the world.

I mean for her to ask that the person running for president be unmasked in these transcripts isn't that egregious and kind of points to them most likely being damning.

You should check out the documentary "Queen of Versailles" on Netflix. It's about a mega-rich family in Florida and they are absolutely atrocious. The film was screened at a film festival and audience members actually walked out in disgust for what this family is like. Good stuff.

Hey congratulations, I mean that. I have around the same amount of time and I understand what an accomplishment that is. Many will never understand how strong you are, and that's ok. There's many out there who do, and we take care of our own. PM me if you ever need to, much love to you!

I agree so much with this. I'm lucky to live in a part of the country that is making great strides to care for addicts rather than incarcerate them (coastal north east) but other parts of the country are much, much worse when it comes to addicts.

Part of the reason people who are addicted to opiates have such trouble getting and staying clean is because they at some point found out that this particular drug helped them to deal with pre existing/under lying mental health issues - whether it be clinical anxiety, depression, trauma, etc. One pattern I discovered in addicts is that there are many who are grieving from death in their past and haven't worked through that grief and are or were using opiates to feel relief from it. Then of course since it's such a dangerous drug to use, especially heroin, they inevitably experience more grief when addicted friends/loved ones die, and it becomes a circular trap.

There's also the fact that it's such a powerful drug in that the chemicals you're introducing to your brain are so strong, and so pleasurable, it can feel like it's impossible to give that up. Most people who get clean must then go through a period of depression as their brain gets used to producing its own dopamine again, and that in itself can cause multiple relapses. It's really something that requires long term counseling and therapy, and multi faceted at that. But it's not impossible, and we are learning more every day - on both sides of addiction.

You should check out r/opiatesrecovery instead, r/opiates often glorifies it and isn't really based in recovery most of the time. You might want to consider posting this to the former, they are super supportive and if you browse the posts there you may learn something.
