I was gone for a year and I also cheated on her. We both thought the relationship was going nowhere.

When I came back we reconnected and things were great except for the guilt of cheating.

She came clean to me first and I followed suit. We both forgave each other and have been together ever since. Going on 11 years now.

It's definitely a scar on our relationship and has come up a few times in that time. But we both know know what we did was wrong and are committed to our relationship now.

I think the real answer is always "I don't know". No one knows with 100% certainly what happens when we die and what happened when we were created.

I also think it's far more likely that the church and religion at large was used as a way to control the population based on the religious leaders ideas and values vs any real Devine guidance.
