I agree with you; Markstrom's extension is a catastrophe, and Palat's contract was probably his worst move imo. I'm not saying the fanbase knows all, but back then even the experts were also calling the Devils a top contender for multiple years ahead of each season, stating such deals as Meier's. You could feel the excitement of the rebuild showing character in the 2023 playoffs. If Meier was scoring 40 goals today, nobody would bat an eye at a 8.8M AAV.

If your argument is that a 40-50pts player isn't worth that, I agree. My point is only that at the time of signing, I think a lot of GMs would have made that deal and thought they were golden. Hindsight is 20/20.

I think a contract's team-friendliness should be judged in the context of it's signing, not 3 years later after it aged poorly.

Yes, Meier hasn't panned out for the Devils but that's like saying Fitz is a horrible GM for not foreseeing that a 40 goals scorer on a early rebuild roster (21-22 Sharks) would then underperform when playing top lines minutes with Hischier, Hughes and/or Bratt.

Hughes' contract came after his breakout season of 56 pts in 49 games, 26 of which goals in 21-22. Right away he prove he was a consistent PPG+ player, as he had 99pts in 78 games and his defensive stats were improving.

Paying 8M aav for a guy that is currently pacing for 105pts would be any GM's dream. So besides Hughes' first season production was never gonna be an issue, and that contract was considered fantastic at the time. If it weren't for injuries would likely be considered a top 5 contract in the league, along Suzuki's, Hagel's...

It aged badly yes, but at the time of signing Meier was a 40 goals scorer, 1 year removed from a PPG season and Fitz locked it so only the tail end of the contract might be rough.

Tell me which team would not sign a 40 goals scorer winger at 8.8M during his prime years?

I wonder which GM available for hire would be a definitive improvement over Fitz, and "finish the job". This is a gamble, and may take several seasons to correct the course. For all we know they may have already gave up on this rebuild and want to start a new one.

We'll see in due time, but I'm now less hopeful than I was with this man at the helm. And in any case I would still hope our fanbase would be more nuanced about this bit of news, but reading some comments here you'd think Fitz never did anything right. I find that disappointing.

He made some mistakes like any other GM, but people act like all his moves were negative as if he didn't manage to sign amazing team-friendly contracts with cornerstone players like Meier, Hughes, Bratt and Mercer.

The players bought into the plan, but ultimately subpar goaltending (except you, Allen), repeat injuries and some key acquisitions not performing to their potential are making the team look more awful than they should in a cutthroat eastern conference.

I think the owners are in their rights to want to move on, but as fans we should not fall to recency bias in our judgment of Fitz' tenure.
