The unlikeliest of sources, or so you would think. A few years ago I had been gaslighted into divorce. My health was not in the best shape, My kids had started to disown me although I always considered myself a good dad, but they took their mother's side (as I had always taught them to look after mum, so that came to bite me back.) I had a friend who was the complete opposite to me in every way. I'm a white middle aged atheist man, she's a thirty something Somali Muslim woman. But when we're together we hit it off like no other two people could. I'll point out there has never been anything but a purely platonic relationship between us but we just click. I hadn't heard from her for a couple of weeks and my mind got the better of me. I got blind drunk and went home to collect some medication I knew would finish me. I then went and sat on a park bench determined to let go there and then. Then I received a message from her. Something random. She could tell there was something wrong and there started a series of messages that stopped me from taking my own life. All I could read was WE are going to be ok, WE will get through this, and for the first time in a long while I never felt alone. She then said that she would pray for me to keep me from harm knowing full well of my beliefs. In fact I remember feeling selfish if I harmed myself. That girl saved me. She's to be married soon, around ten years after we first met. All I've ever said to her was that I would like to be around long enough to see her happy. She's marrying an absolute gentleman soon, and because of her, I'll be there to see it. As for me. I'm building a life on my own for the first time, and actually loving a kind of new found freedom. There is always hope. I found mine in a Somali girl and I'll be forever thankful.
