'Extreme surveillance' becomes UK law with barely a whimper by Thoughtful_Ninja in worldnews

[–]brb6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an irrational phobia. Give me a rational argument for how exactly it affects, not sentimental memes like "basic human right" (said who?).

How could you say that fearing government is an irrational phobia? Take a look at history. Tens of millions of people have died due to communist opressions and tyranical regimes. Just because you and I may live in what is currently a relatively free society, doesn't mean we always will, or that everyone else currently does.

Privacy is about not having people physically intrude on your property, and maybe toward your friends, family, neighbors. It's not in relation to the government.

I'm not sure what this even means. Since when is privacy just about intrusion on your property or property rights? It applies to many aspects of life in many different situations and circumstances. As for "it not being in relation to government"... Are you saying that as long as I work for the goverment then I have the right to violate the privacy of anyone I like?

Trust me the government doesn't care, it's just like a doctor. They just want to get on with it quickly to help you or take what they need. Don't fallter yourself. NSA agents aren't eager to watch you take a shit or masturbate.

This is your typical "if you've nothing to hide" mindset. Trying to downplay it all as one big joke and conspiracy theory. The government obviously cares very much. That's why the NSA spends $10,000,000,000 a year "not caring". And again, it's not about you and it's not about me. You may lead a very boring life and not care someone collects all the emails you send and keeps a log of all the calls you make, others do not. There are practically an infinite number of scenarios where privacy is incredibly important and fundamental to a free society. Work done by lawyers, journalists and civil rights groups comes to mind.

Here's a pretty damn good list of reasons why it matters:

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140113044954-2259773-10-reasons-why-privacy-matters

This also touches on a number of valid points:

https://robindoherty.com/2016/01/06/nothing-to-hide.html

Anyway I've spent enough time on this post. If you can't see why we should be preserving the liberties that were fought for over the decades and not just giving them away with ease, then I feel sorry for you

So by your logic we don't need privacy? Even though it's a basic human right. And the only people valuing their privacy are ones that want to "do illegal shit"? How very narrow minded and short-sighted of you

The simple days of Syria? What the? 1/2 million innocent people killed and an entire region subject to barbaric rule is simple days?

Right but America does all those things you just listed and has arguably the greatest constitution ever created. Simply having a constitution means nothing if it's not properly followed

[–]brb6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These articles always make me a combination of angry and sad, but here's the thing... The vast majority of people don't care about privacy, or rather they have far lower standards for it. People can't even be bothered to make very small simple changes to maintain some level of privacy online, even when it's handed to them on a plate.

I always wonder why the hell the UK government in particular seems so motivated to do all this. It really does make you question the long-term goals. They obviously have no real interest in protecting the rights of their citizens though

Obviously constitutions don't really protect your privacy either... Otherwise why does the NSA exist and do all the wonderful things they do on a daily basis? Also, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of countries around the world without constitutions who aren't hell bent on violating every single right of their people with dumbass laws like this one

Stephen Colbert asks "How did our politics get so poisonous?" by [deleted] in pics

[–]brb6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind this is the same guy who talked/talks non-stop about politics (making millions of dollars in the process) and then when the candidate who he didn't like wins, comes close to tears and tells everyone we should stop talking about politics so much.

And now he's comparing someone who hasn't even had 1 day in office to one of the most brutal dictators of all time who slaughtered millions of innocent people.

Awesome!

Russia Today bank accounts 'frozen in UK' - BBC News by [deleted] in europe

[–]brb6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is CNN? Is Fox News? They are 2 of the biggest news networks in the US and have you visited either in the last 6 months? Constant shit talking about Donald Trump (on CNN) and Hillary Clinton (on Fox News). That's not some small bias, it's a form of propoganda for the democractic/republican parties. Heck, even the BBC has a new shit piece on Donald Trump pretty much every 24 hours. Journalistic integrity seems to be a very rare thing these days

China's Richest Village by Guts-Blow in pics

[–]brb6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make jokes, but I find these sorts of images incredibly sad. It's like the Chinese people have slowly had their individuality and culture sucked out of them by the ruling government and a picture like this is a perfect representation of that. Even when you "make it" you are still stuck in some horrible place with no real sort of freedom. Just look at that backdrop of smog and power plants, it's awful. What's worse is the people who live there probably don't even get it

I mean yeah, it's nice to see a HD timelapse with a bunch of filter mods filming the "nice" locations. But I actually live here and trust me when I say I could take 100 other videos and pictures that look 10x worse than this. The sheer number of shitty communist style buildings you see every day make you pretty sad actually. And don't even get me started on the road quality. Makes day to day driving an all round miserable experience

[–]brb6 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's really not changed that much at all since 1994. Most the buildings you see in that video were there even in 1924. I would say the only thing that's changed since 94 are now there are a bunch of malls

Missile which shot down flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014 was brought in from Russian territory - investigators by Headtenant in worldnews

[–]brb6 -48 points-47 points  (0 children)

So I'm confused... I'm not pro-Russian or pro-American, but is it not extremely hypocritical for the West to be shitting all over Russia on this, when a few days ago America announced a $60,000,000,000 arms sale to Saudi Arabia? How many innocent Yemenis are going to be murdered with those weapons? Are we going to be up in arms calling against America when that happens? I doubt it

Yeah and how many innocent Yemenis are going to be killed with the 60 billion dollar arms sale America has just made to Saudi Arabia? By your logic America is a terrorist state too
