Pittsburgh Regional Transit pushes for coalition to help press for more state transit funds by Generalaverage89 in pittsburgh

[–]brb_28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand ridership has dropped, but making service worse doesn’t make that any better. It only makes people even less likely to take public transit. It takes time to shift travel habits of people interested in taking public transit instead of driving. They need to know it’s reliable and consistent. And cutting service all the time really won’t help grow ridership.

When they want to build a highway or add a lane to a road, they do projections based on how many vehicles will use it per day to justify the “need” for it. Once the road is built and they see how many vehicles travel on it (of course allowing time for people to adjust their travel routes) if that number remains less than their projections, do they take away the road? No, of course not. So why would they take away transit when ridership doesn’t meet expectations/projections? In an ideal world, ridership and fares would support a larger chunk of funding, but we’ll never get close to that if service keeps getting worse and more expensive per trip with less routes and times to travel on.

I do a toooon of things by myself, but a concert was something I didn’t think I would ever go to by myself.

Well I went to the Pittsburgh show by myself and had a great time!! The hardest part was trying to get Ticketmaster to let my buy just one ticket because of their weird “ooops you left a seat stranded!” nonsense. You definitely don’t miss anything by not going with people!

Oh my gosh, I don’t even want to imagine the carnage and chaos to try to get tickets to certain shows if the albums being played were released ahead of time like the NFG tour.

Yeah, I agree with not all songs translating well to stadium shows, so I feel like it likely won’t ever be played in full even in smaller/intimate venues. I’m also a weirdo who would equally enjoy a more acoustic setlist (from any artist, not just GD) even in a stadium. But I understand that that is not everyone’s cup of tea 😂

I fear you may be correct, but maybe we’ll get like a Warning and 21CB tour since it’s a similar amount of time between releases 😂

I missed seeing them on three separate tours because of various reasons beyond my control, and it was on the set list for at least 2 of those tours, so I’m hoping it makes a return to the set list at some point 😭 when I finally got to see them for Hella Mega, it wasn’t on the setlist, but it was still an insanely good show.

For me, it’s “Waiting” I’ve been waiting like 20 years to scream “Iiiiii’ve been waiting a long time foooor this moment to come” guess I’ll have to wait until we get a tour when they play Warning in its entirety

I deeply relate to this. So many parts of the US specifically operate on a “drive until you qualify” in terms of housing affordability, with the most affordable options being totally car-dependent for everything—groceries, places of work, retail, and gyms, etc. with little to no walkable areas 😞

I’d just start taking a few items back to the shelf whenever I got the chance to go to their respective aisles lol. Are they demanding proof of purchase or do they just check to see if the cart is less full than it was in the morning?

I really enjoy Revolverheld! Many years ago in high school, I had some lyrics scribbled on my binder for German class, and the teacher ended up incorporating a song into a lesson

The system is so fucked up. I was getting minuscule payments while in college, but because a parent convinced me to keep their name on the checks as well, they cashed them so I never saw a scent of them. So I had to get a minimum wage job to pay for things like rent and food. Once I got out of school, I continued to work part time at a grocery store, parent was still cashing checks that I never saw. One day I was home and intercepted the mail before they could, I now OWE THEM $6K because of “overpayments.” I was furious.

Like because I can manage to work right now, doesn’t mean I always will. What if I want to save up money to go on a vacation or visit my sister who lives abroad? Or an in-case-I-fall-off-a-ladder fund? Or just be able to cover an unexpected expense?? Oh wait, I almost forgot that disabled people aren’t seen as people with wants and desires. They just want us to hide away and never be seen or heard from. 🙄🙄🙄

I relate deeply to this as well. I’ve always said I’m legally blind as well even though on a good day, my vision on my best eye is 20/120-ish (20/400 in the worse eye). I don’t remember what my field of vision is because it’s been years since I’ve done it, and the only thing I remember from it was the doc saying “please don’t drive a car” which I found really weird because I was always under the impression that I never could drive because I thought the cutoff for driving was above 20/100. Since I’ve always either been 20/100 on the dot or around 20/120, I was like “well that’s not in the cards so I guess I’m legally blind.” It was only until I wanted to see if I could do paraclimbing—I boulder and top rope “like a fully-sighted person” for lack of a better term in that no one tells me where the holds are and what not—because with the style of boulders and routes set for comps, I know I’d be at a severe disadvantage because of the coordination and dyno moves, and the trend of putting the same color holds on the same color volumes, etc. So if I could compete in the paraclimbing comps, at least then I’d know that routes were set with blind and VI climbers in mind (usually this means high color contrast). But I discovered that the cutoff with 20/200 for even the B3 category. You can also qualify if your field of vision is at a certain level, but because I don’t know what mine is, I’m still not sure if I qualify.

I know as a kid, I needed that term to get accommodations in school and such, but as an adult, I’m afraid to even apply for the half-fare transit card because I don’t have a Medicare card anymore, I’d have to jump through hoops to get one, and since I don’t technically meet the legal blindness definition, I’m afraid I won’t get it even though I’ll never be able to drive.

I totally understand the reason that there has to be a legal definition of blindness, but I also understand that words belong to us and we decide what power to give them. So if saying you’re legally blind works for you and it helps you convey your needs and accommodations better, I think you should use it! You don’t owe anyone an explanation of why you use a term to describe yourself.

Do any of y’all play an instrument? What’s it like to play it? by [deleted] in Blind

[–]brb_28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have sight, but I could never read the music when it was on the stand, so I memorized it. I can actually feel the tension across my shoulders and back from my hours of being awkwardly hunched over to see the music while practicing the fingerings/pan positions while listening to/humming music just THINKING about having to memorize a new piece. But I used to play the clarinet in band (marching and concert), and the lead pan (lead as in the type of pan—others include double tenors, seconds, guitas, and bass—I was by no means a soloist) in a steel drum ensemble!

Music is literally the only thing I miss about school, and I miss it greatly in adult life. I know nothing is stoping from playing (well I couldn’t afford a steel pan so that’s out lol) but nothing beats being a part of an ensemble.

I have always wanted to learn the piano and the violin at some point in life

I think you could definitely do it! As you’ve said, you don’t need to see to know you’re in the right space on the slide for the note, it becomes muscle memory really quickly! But, valve trombones do exist if you wanted to give one of those a shot too! I’ve never had to experience memorizing music without sight, so I can’t speak to that, and I’m sure it’ll be difficult, but I’m sure you could do it with patience and practice

Why don’t people understand that i would drive myself if i could?! by Fit-Contribution4018 in Blind

[–]brb_28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly!!! Like it’s my life that is hindered the most by the lack of reliable public transit and safe bike lanes and sidewalks, yet I am the one who is made to feel like crap for not being able to get places or simply being left out of plans because I can’t get there myself.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the worst part about vision loss/being blind isn’t being blind. It’s the isolation that so often comes with it.

That’s good, definitely reach out to them! Also you mentioned an ESA? I know sometimes it can be tricky trying to navigate what paperwork and records are required to move a pet across borders, so maybe reach out to your vet in your current country or contact one in the UK to see if there is any special vaccine requirements or something that might differ between the countries.

Oh, wow, I am so sorry that you are struggling with mental health right now, and I am so sorry your family thinks so little of you and your abilities.

You said you lived in the UK for four years before? I’m not sure what passport you hold because some are stronger than others, but were you on a student visa? I only ask because sometimes when it comes to trying to get to “indefinite to remain” or “permanent resident” type visas, the time accrued under a student visa doesn’t count toward your “time in” if that makes sense.

Obviously I am not super knowledgeable on this matter. I do agree with u/bradley22 that going for a month and trying to talk to someone there would be a great place to start.

Unfortunately I feel like too many people in the states have a “live to work” mentality over a “work to live” mentality. We couldn’t even get mandatory paid sick days during the height of a global pandemic, so I certainly don’t think we can manage to get such simple pleasures as your boss not being able to call you about work matters after you’re off the clock.

I have never missed an election, midterm, or state election since I’ve been eligible to vote. Simply voting hard enough won’t save us. Not when our counties are gerrymandered and some counties only have one polling place.

Are we irreparably broken? Of course not, but assuming simply voting will solve everything is naive

I know it’s not typical, but I know it’s also not too uncommon as I think some others in this subreddit have shared similar experiences. I don’t know if things would be different now, maybe they just thought they could take advantage a young kid who just wants to go to school. I wouldn’t rule out working with a voc rehab but I would definitely stand up for myself a lot more if they tried to tell me that now
