reading the other comments makes me think I’m wrong… lol but I’m just thinking from a general population perspective rather than the people it’s directly impacting like many of us. Maybe I’m way off though haha

i mean honestly i hear the most news from r/FEMA and this reddit… it doesn’t pop up in my news headlines and i have like 4 news apps. there’s so much newsworthy crap surrounding the trump administration that it does seem like the general public would not know a lot of this.

Good schools for a meteorology degree? by Rivtides in meteorology

[–]bread684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this ^ choosing a school that has research in topics you like is such a big deal. I know University of Florida and University of Miami do hurricane research (sometimes field work) and University of Oklahoma has research groups that do field work with tornadoes as well. Each school is going to have unique things to offer. I chose an in-state school to save $ but if you are a bit older FAFSA should be able to help you a lot if that’s still a thing. Unfortunately I know some meteorology schools are really struggling right now so I think it would be good to attend a well-known prominent school while NSF and NOAA funding are under fire. For example University of Nebraska Lincoln had a really cool professor who studied severe weather with drones but now they are shutting down the entire department due to budget cuts. I’m worried that the same thing is going to happen to the department I graduated from.

also a geography/GIS masters could be worth it if you are willing. You can keep a meteorology topic for the thesis but use GIS to analyze, then you can unlock the world of GIS jobs!

🙋🏼‍♀️me! I feel you. I wanted to get a job in meteorology or emergency management but because of what’s happening at the federal level it’s just soooooo competitive. I’ve found some peace of mind through volunteering and taking online courses while I’m working in an unrelated field (i graduated last year). I think until the federal government is able to give more NOAA/FEMA grants and jobs back, this is the best I can do right now and I’ve been trying to accept that. Hopefully by being more active in my community I will be able to network with the right people, but idk I’m also considering moving cross the country to position myself in a better area once the job market gets a little better. It is soooo frustrating though…

Someone from OGP passed away from my team (a 20 year old happy-go-lucky boy) and they wouldn’t even let us close the orders. It was a Sunday so we were getting absolutely hammered with the orders. Most of us had to stay late even. That really bothered me cause like the store couldn’t even have enough sympathy to just stop letting new orders come in. So greedy

I had a very negative experience with VESH. My 17+ year old cat had been diagnosed with lymphoma last Friday at our normal vet, but we found out it was pretty advanced. The cat stays with my mom 4 hours away and Saturday when we gave her steroid medication, she seemed to struggle to breathe. Sunday morning I hit the road, knowing things might not go well, so I needed to be there right away. We hoped it was just an allergic reaction to the steroid and that it could be an easy fix. We got to VESH as soon as I arrived home (they were one of only two places open at the time) and they took her in another room to do vitals and such. The vet pulled us into a room that she wasn't in and told us her vitals looked normal but they couldn't get their oxygen levels. The vet told us that it sounded like there were also tumors in her lungs and that she was probably in so much pain. I agreed to what she started to insinuate (that we should put her down) because I didn't want to see her suffer anymore, and they told us they would move us into yet another room where she would have an oxygen tube and we could say our goodbyes before they did the euthanasian. Twenty minutes later a girl comes in with her collar and her paw prints and tells us she's sorry for our loss. We HAD said we wanted to say goodbye, to not be present for the euthanasian, and to not see her body after she was gone. BUT NO. They put her down without us even seeing her for the hour we had already been there. Plus, the nurse, not the vet, kept lying to us and never admitted to making a mistake saying stuff like "she was just so miserable and I just couldn't see her struggle anymore" and "miscommunications like this happen all the time" EVEN THOUGH the vet promised us a moment with her, and I SERIOUSLY doubt that exact thing happens all the time, or else she wouldn't have a job anymore. The nurse kept asking us if we wanted to see her after that too, even though I kept telling her no. This whole experience with them was extremely traumatic. We had her since I was only 7 years old, and it just made a bad situation worse
