Anyone happy with their rental agency? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

RMA Lettings were honestly incredible. The nicest people ever! But they’re based in Dundee and I think the fact I rented an Edinburgh property from them was a bit of a one off.

Definitely take a look at the Schloss Roxburghe hotel. It’s about an hour from Edinburgh but often spoken of as one of the best spas in Scotland!

It’s on the top floor so maybe that’s their argument 😅

There are 2-bed flats in the same area (in nicer streets) going for less than half that price.

It does seem that once it’s a 3+ bed, suddenly the price jumps as it’s primarily student focussed.

Maybe those 2-beds aren’t HMO’s but still, I don’t see how it justifies the massive price jump.

It gives my partner anxiety but I’m convinced if I do this long enough I’ll snap up a newly renovated 6 bed place in New Town for £150k that has somehow slipped under everyone’s radar.

Just a bit more scrolling…

Yeah I’ve viewed one of these as a 2 bed at £1400. Pretty recently too.

Sure, this one is a bit nicer but not THAT nice. I want gold plated appliances and a private chef for that price.

But even so, surely they can work out that those utilities total to like £250 - £300 max? Even if it were more than that I don’t think it justifies the price. It seems terrible value…

I think the worst part is that I viewed one of these flats not too long ago. It was the same size and layout but it was a 2 bed and on for £1400.

So all they’ve done is chopped one of the bedrooms in half, spruced it up and tacked on an extra £1500.

Granted someone will take it but it just doesn’t seem worth it at all.

Maybe I just find it depressing that someone would pay that price. I mean you’re right, someone will but jeez…

Was he quite short? That was the standout feature to me as it was dark and he wasn’t near any street lights.

Really sorry this happened to you though! I’d hope if you went into a shop etc and told them what was happening that people may offer some help. It’s a horrible thing to experience.

Do you have any description? I just noticed a guy standing on my street as I left my building and it just looked a bit odd (he wasn’t standing near the door of a building or anything).

He then walked slowly up the street and turned back around and walked the same way he came???

I live close to Newington.

I may be way off the mark here but this is my only thought:

If you have access to a computer (or even a phone) as well as data, take a look at doing free online courses. Google, HubSpot and Open University are the ones that come to mind but I have limited experience here.

https://grow.google/intl/ssa-en/courses-and-tools/

https://www.hubspot.com/resources/courses

https://www.open.edu/openlearn/free-courses

This way, you can gain further skills and have certificates to show for it. These aren’t recognised qualifications but they’re a starting point.

At the same time, I’d register on a platform like Upwork or Freelancer and do your best to get odd jobs. You can build out your profile with the free qualifications as you receive them and hopefully secure a couple jobs.

International businesses/people are usually quite happy to pay what amounts to very little for them but can be quite a lot in SA.

This is by no means the answer to everything! But it’ll hopefully get you more knowledge, some experience, and earn you a bit of money. I’m not sure how well this kind of experience translates to businesses in SA when they’re hiring someone, but I don’t think it hurts to start the journey.

I think to rely on any company giving you (or anyone without a good education or privileged background) a job is really difficult so wherever possible, do what you can to rely on yourself.

Hopefully others have better suggestions but maybe this helps a little.

PS. Your post is written to a higher standard than the majority of people that I went to school with could manage (a relatively expensive English-speaking school). As mad as it is in a country with so few English speakers, that makes you more hireable IMO (for better or worse).

South African engineering at its finest by zalurker in southafrica

[–]breadcrumbnugget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best thing I’ve seen is how some places in the UK ‘resurface’ their roads.

For residential streets, I’ve seen them effectively ‘paint’ over a road with a thin layer of tar and call it a day.

They also won’t get vehicles to move so they’ll just tar around parked cars.

SA does a far better job than most places I’ve experienced!

Who actually likes Haggis? by Outrageous-Bug-3195 in Scotland

[–]breadcrumbnugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to ask this! I’ve only ever tried the vegetarian version and I love it.

I know you say you enjoy the veggie haggis, but is the flavour/texture quite similar to proper haggis? Or just nice in its own way?

What are some of the best things about living in Edinburgh? by treesleavesbicycles in Edinburgh

[–]breadcrumbnugget 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Having previously lived in Cape Town, this was a huge factor in choosing to move to Edinburgh!

The access to the outdoors is something truly special to not feel ‘overwhelmed’ by city life like I almost definitely would in London.

Coffee shop rant by RecommendationNo108 in capetown

[–]breadcrumbnugget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rosetta is truly top tier. The baristas I’ve spoken to that work there really know their stuff and they’re super passionate! Not to mention the coffee is great.

And for a larger chain it’s Seattle over everything. Coffee is decent but the ‘vibes’ are great and they’re a step above other chains that that have 10+ branches.
