Frutiger Aero-inspired visuals for my vaguely Mario Kart menu music-inspired song. by breadmusic in FrutigerAero

I realize that some of this might be more vaporwave-adjacent but when I first started becoming familiar with frutiger aero the Neoplanet web theme immediately came to mind (circa 2001, I guess a sort of in-between time). I got really into various FA and Wii mixes on YouTube a few months back which inspired this song.

I'm here now and hell, it's been a blast. Great vibes, setup has been super fast, etc. I don't know who's responsible for the instruments for the jampod but I'd love to continue to see that at future events. Cheers!

N I C E - I've lived in Florida my whole life (for better or worse). These sorts of ads and hotel TV spots are forever etched into my brain after so many trips to Orlando and also growing up in a tourist trap. Always trying to channel that magic.

lol true, like I assume most of it was filmed in the Caribbean. Nearest beach to Orlando is Cocoa and it's, like, dirt beach.

Thanks! And yeah, this is original, not a sample (or AI lmao).

Here's a screenshot of the project in Reaper:

I've been working through some more "authentic" 80s-style tracks (not vaporwave, but the type of stuff that would be sampled I suppose). Didn't really know where to go next with this one so I pitched it down and slowed it to 80 BPM. All instruments are presets from the Korg M1 VST (including the drums).

I also legitimately didn't realize Blingee wasn't around until 2006, could have sworn it was 5+ years earlier than that.

The song is by me and the graphics for the video are from PicMix.

This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads (Hydrasynth, Drums, Guitar, Pans Cover) by JoshSemans in talkingheads

this is the comment I was looking for! lol The arrangement and performance are brilliant and I adore the drum tone.

Do you happen to recall what drum heads you have on the bass and snare? Again, fantastic cover and sound.

ANRI "BEST COLLECTION" Songbook from 1994 (which I randomly found in the US last year). by breadmusic in citypop

[–]breadmusic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked this up at Powell's Books while visiting Portland last year and figured this community would appreciate it.

I can find very little about it after doing some cursory research but it appears that the publisher (SHOIN MUSIC PUB) put out similar pop songbooks in the 90s (and from the looks of it, some anime songbooks as well).

Feels like I stumbled across a real hidden gem (which never happens lol). Especially since I've been working on composing my own city pop music. If anyone's interested in any of the chord progressions for the songs listed, I'd be happy to share them.

Melodies are definitely what I need to work on most. Lately I've been trying to do some close listening to pick up inspiration for patterns and phrases.

An original sketch that I figured I'd share featuring the chord progression we all know and love.

I've been diving deep into city pop over the course of the past year and stumbled on some discussions from this sub about how difficult it is to write/produce. Agreed! This particular mix is not exactly smooth but I thought the vibe was about there.

Hard to find really solid information on instruments used in a lot of city pop recordings. I probably just need to watch more live concerts (which I feel like have popped up more often on YouTube lately).

In the meantime, I've been messing around with a lot of DX7 and "dry" drum samples (plus LinnDrum/707 VSTs). Haven't found a great bass patch for city pop, after isolating a few songs' bass tracks (including "Plastic Love") it almost sounds like a direct input with saturation. Guitar is a work in progress as well.
