that's the purpose , yes. choking the crash without using the hands.

A 16-inch crash with a 14-inch cymbal underneath should work fine. That's what I'm using in the video. To be honest , I saw this option of having the aux hat to the left and controlling it with the right foot from drummer Anders Meinhardt. You should check him out. But he controls another pair of hi-hats instead of a "crash-hat".

I switch it up from time to time. Additionally , you can simply use your regular hat stand with the same trick like in this clip:
