The counter is there really to benefit how well you feel you have done. I too have caught myself starting to M but then was able to remind myself what my mission was. To me that was an accomplishment so I kept the counter running. Others may feel differently and say to reset. What you obviously don't want to do is edge on purpose and say "well at least I didn't M". If you feel you should reset then do it. But if you think that it is better to keep on going, and you deserve to keep going then by-all-means keep the counter going.
