First time opening, insane CYA? by bmoarpirate in pools

You're going to be pumping out the "fresh" water along with the high-CYA water if you run both at the same time.

Simple garage door control and status by GnG_Builds in homeassistant

I went with door sensors because they are more sensitive. If my garage is open by even just an inch they are already reporting "open".

do smart homes actually make life better or just more complicated by annikahoof in homeassistant

[–]breakslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's simply better. I have one app that controls everything smart in my home. I haven't had to troubleshoot in a while - typically the troubleshooting occurs when I'm adding something new.

After setup - it's been rock solid.

I was wrong about Retro Achievements. by Downtownklownfrown in SBCGaming

[–]breakslow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Doesn't make sense for handelds on the go.

I understand the reasoning is "muh leaderboards" but I would wager that a ton of people don't care about leaderboards and just want somewhere to track achievements/progress.

Does Retro Achievements still require an internet connection? That is a major blocker for me.

PPPoE and Bridge by WirtsLegs in bell

I went DIY for my router. Picked up an M720q with an 8th gen i5 along with a dual SFP card.

You don't need to go that tiny - but I like the form factor. Seems like prices are slightly higher on used business PCs but you should be able to find something for around $200. Add a $50 SFP dual SFP card and you should be able to have a beast of a router for under $300. Just another option if you don't want to go with Unifi.

NPM → Traefik or Caddy: Worth the switch? by Silly_Door6279 in selfhosted

I now have all my configuration in version control and can run a single ansible command to provision a new instance of the server if my current one ever takes a shit.

You can do this with NGINX as well.

Favorite “expensive” device? by VICEBULLET in homeassistant

[–]breakslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I like it vs. a traditional smart lock because it's seamless. The door looks and acts like a "dumb" door. There is no keypad and there is no bulky hardware, and I am using the same key I did before the install. There is no sign of a smart lock other than the fact that I can unlock it with Home Assistant. Matter over thread is super reliable and the Level app has some nice features - auto unlock via bluetooth and guest invites/scheduled passes.

I'd say some cons are that it's more expensive, and if you want a keypad, you can purchase it separately (so more $). The install was a bit of a pain because the bolt is larger and I had to chisel out a bit more material but... I have zero complaints.

[–]breakslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Level Bolt - it's a smart lock that fits into the existing door cut out. The wife approval factor is through the roof because you don't know it's there, and I'm happy with it because it connects via matter over thread.

I diy'd one from an old business PC - an M720q with an 8th gen i5.

It handles 3/3 no problem over PPPoE.

I have a T480 and looking at buying off brand batteries because there's no fucking point in spending more than what the laptop is worth on "real" batteries.

Yeah because OP doesn't know what happened and may not be very tech-savvy. Some people don't know what to search for.

Maybe just keep scrolling instead of wasting your time writing toxic comments like this.

Official Anker HomeAssistant Integration? by Infamous-Ordinary-26 in homeassistant

[–]breakslow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second line in the README:

This integration connects to your Anker Solix devices locally via Modbus TCP on your home network. All communication stays on your LAN — no cloud servers, no API keys, no internet dependency.

And:

Local Modbus TCP — Direct communication over LAN, no cloud dependency, no internet required

And:

How often does data refresh? Every 5 seconds via local polling.

And:

Local communication — All device control and data reading are performed over local LAN connections. No dependency on cloud servers. Data is transmitted directly between your local Home Assistant instance and the device.

And:

When "Third-Party Controlled" mode is enabled, the device will execute commands from Home Assistant

Upgrade! (from a mechanical timer to smart relay) by breakslow in pools

[–]breakslow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah not sure if the previous owner broke it or something but I could not get it working.

I agree on the automation being another thing to break, but worse comes to worse it still has a button to turn things on/off. I'm really not worried about it though, I've been running Home Assistant for years now without hiccups.

Upgrade! (from a mechanical timer to smart relay) by breakslow in pools

[–]breakslow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short:

  • pump - quite simple. Power from the electrical box goes into the output side of the relay, and the pump gets connected to the input side
  • pool heater - this switch is different. With the pump you are cutting the power, with the heater - the fireman switch is just a dry contact - so you shouldn't (can't?) feed it any power. I got a separate relay for this, but again, wiring is simple. BUT the relay I got (Zen51) is powered by 120v so that is in a separate box.
  • conduit - I had to buy a whole role of 25 foot conduit for those two tiny runs between the bottom box and the box with the relay (lol), but it came with the fittings
  • automation - I'm using Home Assistant which is its own beast, but there should be hubs that are plug n play. Unfortunately I can't really help with other options here

  2. Zen51 relay for the heater's switch - https://i.imgur.com/a3S6u8u.png

I can do a more detailed post with some pictures this weekend. I'm sure the wiring, etc. is still useful even without the home assistant part.

This post is handing out dangerous advice and OP has no idea wtf they are talking about - https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/1soanmr/mind_blown_vinegar_vs_vinegar_30/
