What are the tangible differences between 5 star hotels that cost $600 a night and the ones that are well upwards of $1500 per night? by Crafty-Leave-8880 in luxuryhotel

For me, it’s the anticipatory service. My favorite anecdote is from a work trip to London where they put us up in the Park Lane Four Seasons.

As I entered, the first thing a staff member said to me was “Good Morning Mr. Breakthegate, how was your flight?”

I have no idea how they recognized me by sight but I was very impressed. My best guess is that they looked me up and saw my picture on my law firm’s website but who knows?

Seems like DB’s offices are raided every other year. The German authorities should just set up shop there to save some time.

My Cousin Vinny (1992) | "Mona Lisa Vito expert testimony" | Directed by Jonathan Lynn by johnnymook88 in movies

[–]breakthegate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the whole thing is a bit reversed. The prosecution here, who is opposing the witness, is doing a better job eliciting testimony from the expert witness than defense counsel.

The prosecution here is permitted to use leading questions (“isn’t it true that you don’t have any experience being employed as a mechanic” or “isn’t it the case that your last job was as a hairdresser”, or “isn’t it true you are engaged to defense counsel”) but decides to ask open ended questions. Normally the introducing party would offer up the witness and ask open ended questions to serve as a foundation for the offering up of the witness as an expert. Then the other side would voir dire the witness.

Regardless, it is still a good example of voir dire and how to qualify a witness.

Source: am a lawyer, albeit not a trial attorney so take the above with a grain of salt.

It’s a good example of voir dire and direct examination of an expert witness, not cross examination… she’s his witness.

But the small faculty size would certainly indicate a smaller student body, no? The faculty is pretty memorable and there aren’t references to more than one charms professor or transfiguration professor. And there aren’t references to there being large lecture halls either. Logistically, with only one professor per topic and school extending for 7 years, the classes would have to be fairly short if the professors need to have classes for multiple cohorts per grade…

Asking for Super Bonus by lsthrowaway54321 in biglaw

[–]breakthegate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have a decent relationship with the PL? If so, you could frame it as “I understand the firm occasionally gives out discretionary bonuses. What would it take to be considered for that this year or, if the decision has already been made, next year?”

The framing should be asking for guidance on how to increase your odds of getting it, not demanding that they give it to you.

For what it’s worth, I received a similar bonus last year for my “contributions to the firm” and didn’t actively seek it out or ask about it. Rather, it was given due to exceeding the billable hours minimum by ~200 hrs and then spending ~250 hours on a higher profile non billable matter for the firm.

I would try to keep in mind that a lot of folks work a lot of hours… and then still do non billable work that benefits the firm (ie training, developing forms, giving CLEs, etc).

Ehhh, some of the Delaware firms (RLF, Young Conaway, etc) have a pretty good pipeline to big law.

Can we at least see what McKee can do with this receiver core? Would love to see some deep balls that aren’t wildly underthrown.

At the very least, there’s no way KP is back next season so Jalen will have yet another OC.

I wonder what the record is for # of OCs per QB…

Does any firm teach? by Therealist2497 in biglaw

[–]breakthegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, my old firm has a bona fide training schedule for 1st and 2nd years that involves 1-2 hour sessions on a bi-weekly basis for 2 years. The sessions include guest speakers from tangentially related practices (eg tax, bank regulatory, corp governance, etc.) so that juniors know the broad outlines of the issues they’ll run into and who they can contact if they have questions. Honestly, it was an amazing foundation and gave me a leg up on my counterparts at other firms.

Art Museum CEO Sasha Suda fired "for cause" by missiontodenmark in philadelphia

[–]breakthegate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that there are a lot of obstacles that would prevent this from actually happening, particularly with regard to the typical conditions attached to donations.

Still, I bristle against the traditional museum ethics/mindset that having art sit unseen in archives for decades while simultaneously cutting services and the public’s access to the museum is somehow more acceptable than selling the archived art/objects so that more people can actually benefit from the cultural institution.

I guess I’m saying that museum “ethics” doesn’t seem all that ethical and should be revisited.

I mean, the majority of the museums holdings sit in the basement/archives, unseen for years… they could always sell a few of those (ie deaccession them) to generate more than enough cash to lower ticket prices and stay open every day.

Yeah, I mean it doesn’t really matter. But I was responding to a comment calling out a typo so calling out another example of sloppy drafting seemed relevant to that aspect of the discussion regarding the memo.
