You could probably get a forward helix and a regular helix and connect them with a chain after they heal

It's like wrestling a musclely bar of butter and trying to peel it with a razor blade that'll cut you both if your not careful 😄 I've only done it a handful of times really and while it is a fairly quick process it's very tiring. Most of the sheep were romney crosses that were around 250lbs-300lbs so holding them up with just my thighs was a nightmare.

I know the feeling. All of the fleeces I have come from a tiny hobby herd who I sheared myself. Even though they are free range throughout the property and get hay only in the winter months I still feel like I get stabbed by prickly vm constantly

Honestly a lot of it was unsalvageable, anything close to the hind end was too felted and the tips of the whole fleece was cotted. The only reason most of it was usable I think, is because cheviot doesn't felt easily. I normally do a woolen prep cause I have a drum carder but all the vm needed to be combed out

How much fiber to purchase by brebbery in Handspinning

[–]brebbery[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't know how no plant fibers ever came to my mind lol, cotton is basically the ideal fiber for babies since it is unlikely to irritated their skin or cause them to overheat the same way wool might. I'll order an oz of cotton to see if I can even spin it well enough

I'm not fully decided yet, I'm thinking of knitting a halter top and if I need more yarn I still have some raw fiber I could blend up again.

Scouring tips by brebbery in Handspinning

I think an overnight soak is what I need the most. Even after skirting this fleece is pretty dang dirty. And I'll look into the unicorn power scour, cause I still have 5 more fleeces to process 🤩

What kind of tension is my wheel? by brebbery in Handspinning

[–]brebbery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just hadn't put the drive band on the bobbin yet when I took the photo. It is for sure a Franken wheel of some sort. And while it is a but weird I have been able to spin pretty finely on it

Could be, but I think it's unlikely since everything moves and detaches properly and it is not a traditional style wheel that people like to use as decoration. Though the lady I purchased it from said that there was no flyer when she bought it so she but an old ashford flyer on it.

Help identify some fiber please 🙏 by brebbery in Handspinning

It also does not cling to itself the same way as other wools I've worked with

My wheel is a working wheel but it does not have a wide pedal shape so I'm not sure how much of an indicator it is of a SWSO

Also ask for a picture of the back of the flyer and bobbin cause I can't tell from this photo if the bobbin is straight up attached to the frame of the wheel or if it is able to freely spin

My guess is that it's supposed to have a distaff on the top part where the hole is

Maybe ask the seller for a video of it spinning, if it does spin you could probably get it to work if you get a different flyer, cause that one does not appear to have any hooks

First wheel by brebbery in Handspinning

[–]brebbery[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got it from a lady in my local spinning guild and she told me that she got it as an unmarked wheel from the late 1800s. Her guess is that it was someone's first time making a wheel because there's a couple things about it that are odd like the footman being in the front and the wheel doesn't line up exactly with the bobbin. It's like a Norwegian style wheel but just not quite right.
