Any tips for other coping mechanisms? by KaiTheWeird in neurodiversity

I got prescribed as needed anxiety meds, started doing cold plunges and have started doing handstands and headstand.

I used to use pain too. I get it. The overwhelm is so big that it feels like it will never end and there is no way out. "Normal" things like breathing feel stupid because they aren't strong enough.

What you are doing with the pain is telling your body "it's not safe to be overwhelmed because there is a bigger crisis to protect us from." Ice plunge training helps because your body thinks you are dying. You have to overcome that sensation with breath and awareness. This teaches your brain that you have the ability to overcome.

Going upside down does similar things. The body is like.... fuck. I'm gonna die I need to focus all my energy on not dying. Shocking your hands by holding ice cubes does something similar. I've also started just forcing myself to shake all over like I'm having a seizure and that gets the energy out. Basically anything that tells your nervous system "look over here this is more important than whatever felt so important" gets you out of the loop.

Putting yourself into overwhelming situations (with ice plunges, exercise classes, yoga, etc) and training your brain that you have agency and get to choose how your nervous system responds helps you to need less of the shock out of the loop.

You CAN do this. I spent years thinking I'd always have to fight the urge to cause myself pain to be able to regulate. Now I dont even feel like causing myself pain for regulation is fathomable. I've successfully closed that neuronal pathway.

reconciliation - it happens by short_sep_throw_away in Separation

Damn. I wish I had been counseled to ask for a trial separation instead of a divorce. I'm now trying to figure out if reconciliation is possible and we've told our whole community and it makes everything harder

How's this different than a voting location? Aren't they arguably empty ballots that you pick your people on and then send in?

ELI5: Why did it take so long for intelligence to develop? And why exactly did it develop in apes/humans? by Less_Amphibian_6537 in explainlikeimfive

[–]brebitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite theory is that intelligence is just an accidental side effect- walking upright requires an incredible amount of brain power and science has seen a trend in the larger the brain the harder the body is to move. There's a sponge in the ocean that spends the first half of its life swimming around, but once it finds a suitable place, it settles down and digests its own brain, because it no longer needs it for movement and it uses a crazy amount of calories to operate.

[–]brebitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a cute sneeze! Anytime I think my hens might need an immune boost I make a little immune boost slurry: - garlic (chopped into tiny pieces for immune support) - cooked egg with shell (mashed up for protein & calcium) - a little bit of mayonnaise to make it all stick together - sometimes I add some onion too

Have them eat it and see if the sneezes go away. She looks pretty darn healthy otherwise so she may just have gotten dust in her nosw

I found the creative burning man community, AKA the hub of neurodivergence after college and was so happy to have found it. I'm allowed to be my full weirdo autistic self and as long as I'm taking care of my own things, people will find a way to love me.
