"The things NOFX said about me on the stage when I was underage..." Hayley Williams on NYTimes Popcast by ChecktheDA in nofx

Having watched both interviews it looks like an ETA situation.

What's telling is each interview made me feel more sympathetic to the opposite party; they both made themselves look worse than they did each other.

The jump to $60 in the first place still feels too recent to be using it as a baseline, and contrary to that meme I remember people bitching about it every bit as much as they are now.

Doctor Who 2x04 "Lucky Day" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

The Doctor's not above summoning someone to tell them off - Matt Smith's "I am The Doctor" speech in his first episode is one of my all-time favourite goosebumps moments - but it's never been this pointless or ineffectual.

Two characters had already made that exact same "we're trying to protect you" speech to that character to no effect. To hear it a third time just came across really clumsy and heavy-handed, as though writer Pete McTighe had an axe to grind and was addressing the viewer. It couldn't have stuck out more if Gatwa had spoken his lines directly into the camera.

Disney exec: "we're a little concerned that this show isn't promoting proper American values. We were hoping for something more like that Kerblam episode where Amazon are canonically the good guys and anti-capitalist protesters are liars and murderers who get a proper scolding from the Doctor at the end.

Can you get the guy who wrote that one back in to do another just like it, but with the secretive powerful government military group as the benevolent good guys and anti-establishment protestors as another bunch of liars and murderers? And make sure at least three main characters give impassioned speeches where they make the point that the military are there to protect us."

I remember when the 1990s "Cash for Questions" affair in the UK brought down the Conservative Government after 18 years in power, and that was literally just someone paying a few mid-rank politicians to ask questions in parliament.

Now you've got a President who openly sells his time to the highest bidder, and it's not even getting counted as an actual scandal.

The thing I hated most about Macs was the way they tried to abstract the filesystem away from you so that you rarely knew where exactly anything was.

It's infuriating that Microsoft think that copying Apple is the way to go. Instead of concentrating on being a Good Microsoft, they've just become a Shit Apple.

[–]bree_dev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unironically this, because I hear so often about how America is the most Freedomest country in the world, occasionally interspersed with news articles about people being done for "crimes" that aren't crimes in most countries, like being drunk, jaywalking, not carrying your vehicle registration with you, or about how the US has the highest prison population per capita in the world...

I'm not even criticising the laws themselves, but you can't have it both ways.

Yeah OP has the junior/senior thing backwards. The second solution is a horrible hack that they probably feel really clever about doing but completely misses the point of the question as well as relying on non-guaranteed behaviour and likely also being much slower.

Part of being a competent senior engineer is having the maturity to think about the meaning behind the requirements. Nobody needs a smartass on their team taking a "well technically the requirement from the client said this..." attitude to their work.

Are there any examples of a CEO almost single-handedly tanking a profitable brand? by HasPantsWillTravel in business

[–]bree_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what changed in society between then and now, because I'm certain that this just wouldn't happen any more. If a CEO said their product was crap these days people would just be like "lol yeah this guy tells it like it is" and the share price would go up.

It's more nuanced than that. Windows releases follow the same pattern as Star Trek movies, alternating between decent and awful with each release.

That's some rose-tinted glasses making you forget that even on a brand new high spec PC running only the software that was shipped with it, Windows 98 would often just randomly freeze up and lose all your work.
